A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work
All of the following work is dependant on suitable weather conditions.
M4 Baydon
Maintenance work has started on the central reserve and drainage system on the M4 between Baydon and Membury Service Station. Currently there are off-peak hard shoulder and lane 1 closures (between 9.30am – 4.30pm).
The existing steel barrier and drainage system need replacing. The existing steel barrier will be replaced by a concrete central barrier. This work is scheduled to be completed by March 2010.
A free 24hour roadside vehicle recovery service will be available in the works area in order to minimise delays for road users as a result of breakdowns.
M4 Junction 8/9
Improvements to the circulatory carriageway of the M4 Junction 8/9, A404(M), A308(M) interchange are scheduled to start week commencing 7 December 2009 for approximately 12 nights, weather permitting. Work will take place overnight between 2200hrs and 0600hrs.
Work will involve resurfacing of the circulatory carriageway and re-designation of lanes on all entries and exits to the roundabout.
The exit and entry slip roads on all approaches to the roundabout will be closed at various stages throughout the works, with diversion routes clearly signed. There will be no speed limit restrictions imposed.
M27 Junction 8 Bursledon
The M27 westbound on-slip at junction 8 will be closed overnight from 02 December for approx 4 nights between 22:00hrs – 05:30hrs for maintenance works to improve the condition of the carriageway.
During these hours, the westbound on-slip at junction 8 will be fully closed. Drivers wishing to join the M27, will be diverted eastbound on the M27 to junction 9, using the roundabout the rejoin the M27 going westbound.
M4 Junction 5 – 7
Daytime and overnight work to renew bridge parapets, safety fences, and waterproofing the bridge decks continues this week. Three narrow lanes will be maintained in each direction.
A 50mph speed restriction will be in force and free recovery in place. This speed restriction and narrow lanes will remain until the work is complete in Spring 2010.
A404(M)
Work is underway for replacing the Western Region Railway Bridge on the A404(M) near Maidenhead. Two narrow lanes will be available at peak times in each direction throughout. A 40mph speed limit will be in place for the safety of drivers and the workforce. Overnight there will be the occasional contra-flow and lane and slip road closures with signed diversions.
M3 Junction 4-3 Drainage Phase 2
Drainage work continues this week on M3 between J4 and J3, and is scheduled to be completed by early February 2010, weather permitting.
This weekend the traffic management will change and will result in the southbound being open without any restrictions and the northbound carriageway will have three narrow lanes open at peak times.
Narrow lanes on the northbound carriageway will be in place from Monday 30 November until early February. There will be some off-peak lane closures. A 50 mph speed limit will be enforced throughout the site, for the duration of the works.
These works are essential as they are to replace the drainage systems on this section of the M3, which will improve the dispersal of water from the carriageway and make journeys more safe and reliable. The work is taking place between the Maultway Bridge (B3015) and Junction 3 (A322).
M3 J4 Blackwater Valley Bridge Works
Bridge maintenance work on the M3 at Junction 4 continues this week until the end of December, weather permitting.
These works are required to maintain the safety and long-term serviceability of the structure.
To minimise disruption to road users and for the safety of road workers, work will be undertaken at night between 22.00hrs and 06.00hrs. It will be necessary to reduce the carriageway to single lane running whilst the works are taking place. It will also be necessary on occasions to close the J4 slip roads overnight for the deck expansion joints to be installed. When slip road closures are in place there will be a fully signed diversion to Junction 4a.
A3 Sheet Link, Petersfield
The A3 northbound on slip at Sheet Link Interchange will be closed over night from 03 December to 06 December between 22:00 and 05:30hrs for resurfacing works.
Drivers wishing to join the A3 northbound will be diverted onto the southbound carriageway to the Petersfield Interchange to join the A3 northbound leading back to the Sheet Interchange.
A34 Sugworth
Tree and vegetation clearance works to the A34 at Sugworth, between Hinksey and Abingdon North are scheduled to take place on the 7 December 2009, for ten nights (Monday to Friday) between the hours of 10pm – 6am. Works require a lane one closure to the A34 southbound carriageway and are weather dependant.
This work is undertaken following a request from Natural England for the removal of vegetation from a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. The trees, which are quite substantial growing on both sides of the bridge, are to be removed and the stumps treated.
A34 Wolvercote Viaduct replacement scheme Ongoing there is a 40mph speed limit in place and two narrow lanes running both northbound and southbound on the A34 enforced by average speed cameras. The speed limit is in place for the protection of road users and road workers.
Also ongoing, the A40, which runs under the viaduct, has a 30mph speed limit and will require night time off-peak temporary traffic lights at times. Intermittent short term closures will be required of one of the cycleway/footways to continue construction activities. Localised signed diversion routes will operate, with a temporary signalised pedestrian crossing on the east side of the Wolvercote viaduct to assist cyclists and pedestrians with a safe crossing point.
A27 Hilsea to Warblington Lighting Major Maintenance Work continues this week on the second phase of works along a 2km of the A27 between Hilsea and Warblington in order to replace the existing lighting and drainage as well as carrying out safety barrier renewals.
This week there will be overnight lane closures between 21:00hrs and 05:30hrs on both carriageways to allow central reserve works to take place.
Traffic Signal Upgrade
A series of traffic signal upgrades across the region continues this month at various junctions on the Area 3 network. The work will involve replacing the current bulbs with new LED signal heads at over 40 sites over the next ten months. The new LED signal heads are brighter and lower voltage, offering safety environmental and maintenance benefits.
A3 Hindhead
Major improvement work to improve the A3 and remove the current bottleneck at Hindhead traffic lights continues this week.
Traffic management for the scheme starts just before the A3 Thursley junction at the north end (nearest to Guildford) with a temporary road layout and 40mph speed limit. At the south end there is a 50mph limit starting south of the A3 Liphook junction, reducing to 40mph at Hammer Lane.
