Work to provide a smoother, quieter road surface for the A14 near Cambridge will start next week

A £282,000 scheme to repair just over three miles of the eastbound in Cambridgeshire to provide a quieter, smoother road surface will start on Monday 7 December.

The work, which takes place overnight only, will replace sections of the worn out road surface of lanes one and two of the eastbound carriageway between J31 for Girton and J33 for Milton. The road markings, road studs, bridge joints and traffic counting loops will be replaced at the same time.

Work will take place between 8pm and 6am on Monday to Friday nights and is due to be complete by 6am on Thursday 17 December. Traffic management will start just before the Bar Hill interchange on the A14 and also at the A1303 interchange on the A428.

The A14 along this stretch is used by 30,000 vehicles each day, but the work is being carried out overnight when traffic flows are at a minimum. Overnight work will minimise delays to road users, and all traffic management will be lifted during the day.

Highways Agency project manager Nick Cook said:

“This essential work is part of the maintenance programme to improve and lay a quieter road surface on this section of the A14 in Cambridgeshire. We are also recycling and reusing as much of the current road surface as we can as part of our commitment to protecting the environment.

“Road users should allow extra time for their journeys while these roadworks take place. We advise drivers to plan their journeys before setting off by using the Highways Agency website on www.highways.gov.uk: http://www.highways.gov.uk/, tuning in to traffic radio and listening to local travel news reports on the radio.”

Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place when there are carriageway and slip road closures. The diversion routes will add approximately 15-30 minutes to an average journey.

Eastbound traffic using the A14 and A428 will be directed to follow the M11 southbound to J10, the A505 to the A11 and then the A11 Northbound to the A14 at J36.

Local traffic will be able to use the A1307 to gain access to Cambridge.

The scheme is being delivered with Fiscal stimulus funding from the Department for Transport, enabling  the Highways Agency to deliver a total of £400 million of accelerated works this financial year – part of the Government’s work to kick-start the economy and help ‘Build Britain’s Future’.
