Barrier works completed M1 Junction 35-35a
The Highways Agency has now completed work on the central reservation barrier between Junction 35 and 35a of the M1 near Sheffield.
On Sunday afternoon (13/12/09) lane three of the motorway was reopened to drivers and the majority of cones and signs were removed. A final 10 days of work will now take place on the motorway verges to remove the CCTV and safety cameras, and reinstate manhole covers, all of this work will be completed before Christmas.
This scheme is part of the £16.4m safety improvement works on the M1 in South Yorkshire – accelerated for delivery as part of the Department for Transport’s £700 million fiscal stimulus package. Once complete, the programme will have installed a concrete barrier between junctions 32 (M18 northbound diverge) and 35a (Stocksbridge Bypass).
Work is progressing well on the final phase of the barrier scheme between Junction 33 (Sheffield Parkway) and 34 (Meadowhall). The steel central reservation barrier is being replaced with a safer concrete barrier over this 2.4mile stretch of motorway. There are three narrow lanes in each direction until March and a 50mph speed limit in place. Drainage improvement and resurfacing work are also being carried out at the same time.
The new concrete barriers are stronger and more robust – reducing the risk of vehicles involved in accidents crossing from one side of the motorway to the other and improving the safety of road users and road workers. The barriers are also less likely to require repairs after vehicle impact.
Highways Agency Project Sponsor Sujad Hussain said:
“The barrier replacement scheme will increase safety along this stretch of the M1, and in order to limit any delays to road users, we’ve been delivering the improvements in stages and maintaining three lanes in each direction throughout. Delays to driver will be slight, but we advise drivers to take extra care when travelling through roadworks and allow plenty of time for their journeys.”
The Highways Agency is liaising with local businesses, adjacent to the works site, to ensure that disruption during the peak Christmas shopping period is kept to a minimum. By using the hard shoulder during the work, the Agency is able to maintain three lanes in both directions. In addition, a free recovery service is in operation, with CCTV monitoring ensuring that incidents and breakdowns are cleared as quickly as possible.
Work to install concrete barriers between Junctions 34 and 35 (Thorpe Hesley) and Junctions 32 (M18 northbound merge) and 33 have already been completed.
