Boost for Cumbria Economy in M6 Bridges Scheme
Renewal and improvement work to three bridges on the M6 in Cumbria – accelerated for delivery as part of the Department for Transport’s £700 million fiscal stimulus package – will begin next week.
Work to renew waterproofing, joints and parapets on Ambrose Holme, Johnny Bulldogs Lonning and Rosehill flood relief bridges, north east of Carlisle, will start on Monday (January 4). The work is due to be completed before Friday, March 26.
The bridges, between junctions 43 and 44 of the M6, carry a one mile section of the motorway just south of the River Eden. As well as the £600,000 bridge repairs £250,000 is being spent on a new noise barrier at Linstock which will reduce noise pollution for people living near the motorway.
The work will extend the life of the bridges and reduce the need for unscheduled repairs – reducing future inconvenience to motorway users.
Traffic management for the project will include phases of contraflow running with width restrictions as well as lane closures. Two lanes in each direction will be kept running most of the time but with occasional single lane running overnight. Junction 43 sliproads will be subject to occasional overnight closures but with signed diversions in place.
Matt Sweeting, Highways Agency Regional Performance Manager, said:
“We welcome the opportunity to bring forward these repairs and improvements for the M6 past Carlisle. It will reduce the need for unplanned repairs and extend the life of the motorway in this area. We are also doing all four schemes at the same time within the same roadworks to limit any impact on and inconvenience to drivers.”
During the work, a 50mph speed limit will be in place to ensure the safety of road users. Drivers are advised to approach these roadworks with care and allow extra time for their journeys.
