M6 – Delivering Managed Motorways – M6 Junctions 8 to 10A Roadworks Update

Work on the in the West Midlands, which will allow sections of the hard shoulder to be opened to traffic during busy times, will resume this weekend following the prolonged period of severe weather.

As part of the M6 Managed Motorways scheme, these works will deliver hard shoulder running on the M6 between Junction 8 (Rayhall) and J10A (M54) by spring 2011. The roadworks involve the use of narrow lanes and a 50 mph speed in both directions.

Work to install narrow lanes between J10 (Walsall) and Junction 8 (Rayhall) will be carried out overnight between 15 and 24 January and will require some overnight closures of the following slip and link roads:

* M6 Junction 8 southbound link to M5 southbound
* M5 Northbound link to M6 Junction 8 Northbound
* M6 Junction 9 Northbound off slip or on slip
* M6 Junction 9 Southbound off slip or on slip
* M6 Junction 10 Northbound off slip
* M6 Junction 10 Southbound on slip

The diversion routes will be clearly signed using a combination of the Highways Agency’s variable message signs and temporary yellow signs in advance and on the nights of the closures.

Project Head, David Grant said:
“This scheme will help road users make their journeys safely and more reliably by using variable speed limits to manage the flow of traffic and opening up the hard shoulder as a running lane to provide additional capacity when required.

“To keep disruption to a minimum, we will keep three lanes available in each direction during the day while the work is carried out.”
