Weekly Summary of Roadworks in Kent & Sussex – 21/01/2010
A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work
All of the following work is dependant on suitable weather conditions.
A2 Kingston Footbridge
Preparation work for a new bridleway bridge allowing a safe way of crossing the A2 near Canterbury started in early November. The new bridge will be at Kingston, halfway between Black Robin Lane and Out Elmstead Lane and will provide a safe place for pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users to get over the A2. For the safety of road users, there will be a 24-hour single lane closure and temporary 50mph speed limit in both directions for the duration of this phase of the work.
A259 De La Warr Road Resurfacing
There will be full overnight (8pm – 6am) carriageway closures of both the east and westbound carriageways of the A259 De La Warr Road between Dorset Road and the A2036 Hasting Road junctions in Bexhill-on-Sea East Sussex from Monday 18 to Friday 22 January. During this time road users wishing to travel eastbound along the A259 will be diverted right onto Dorset Road to join Penland Road northbound. They will then be directed right onto the A2036 Hastings Road to rejoin the A259 eastbound at Glyne roundabout. Westbound road users will be directed to use the same diversion as eastbound road users in the opposite direction. The work is to resurface the road and install road markings. The closures will be fully signed in advance.
A27 Worthing to Brighton Street Lighting There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) narrow lanes with a mobile lane closure on one carriageway at a time at two locations on the A27 at Sussex Pad, Hangleton Junction, Devils Dyke Interchange and Patcham Interchange from Monday 01 February to Friday 05 February. The work is to upgrade the current lighting units and traffic bollards. The narrow lanes and mobile lane closure will be fully signed in advance.
A27 Speed Limit Review and Cophall Farm Pedestrian Crossing Removal The second phase of work to relocate the existing Puffin Crossing 120 metres south of the roundabout and remove the traffic lights on the roundabout continues this week. There will be lane closures, traffic management and a 40mph speed limit on the roundabout and Polegate Bypass. The lane closures and temporary speed limit will be fully signed in advance.
M20 Junction 8 Ashford Road
The A20 Ashford Road bridge, which runs above the M20 junction 8 overbridge will be closed from Wednesday 11 January until mid February. The work is being carried out in order to replace the parapets, safety barrier around the bridge and stabilize the embankment to ensure its structural safety. During the closure traffic will be sent on a short diversion through to the roundabout adjacent. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained at all times.
A2 Boughton Hill Fog Detectors
There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closures on either carriageway of the A2 at Boughton Hill, while work is carried out to install new fog detectors and advance warning signs. Work is being carried out each night Monday – Friday and will be complete by the end of January. The fog detectors will sense moisture in the air, which will then trigger a fog sign to flash up. This will war drivers if visibility is reduced on the road ahead. The lane closure will be fully signed in advance.
A20 Pull Off Points
There will be various overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures on the coastbound and Londonbound carriageway of the A20 between Roundhill Tunnel and Dover from Wednesday 13 January to Saturday 13 February. The work is being carried out to provide permanent areas for maintenance vehicles to park off the main carriageway. This will improve safety road users and members of the workforce as maintenance vehicles will be out of the way of the main flow of traffic. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.
A27 Crab Hill Lane Overbridge
There will be various lane closures and temporary traffic lights on Crab Hill Lane from Monday 4 January for four weeks. The work is to replace the parapets and safety barrier on the northbound M23 at Crab Hill overbridge. The lights will operate continuously through this period. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.
M2 Brenley Corner Signalisation
Work continues on Phase 1 of this scheme, with an overnight single lane closure on the M2 Brenley Corner interchange and a full closure of the A299 exit slip road for nine consecutive nights from Thursday 14 January. During this time all traffic will be diverted to continue to the M2 junction 6 and return on the coastbound carriageway to junction 7. This diversion will also apply to non-motorway traffic as there is no other suitable diversion. There will be an overnight 50 mph speed limit on approach to the A299 exit slip road and on both carriageways of the M2 between junction 6 and 7. The work is being carried out to install new traffic signals on the M2 junction 7 coastbound exit slip road and the A299 Londonbound exit slip road to manage the amount of traffic around Brenley Corner interchange and improve the flow of traffic especially at peak times. The lane closures and slip road closure will be fully signed in advance.
A259 Cherry Garden Avenue Roundabout
There will be an overnight closure of the M20 junction 13 Londonbound exit slip road on Monday 18 January. There will then be a separate closure of the M20 Londonbound junction 13 entry slip road between Tuesday 19 and Saturday 30January. The work is being carried out in order to enhance the safety around the A259 Cherry Garden Roundabout by resurfacing as well as renewing road markings and road studs. The slip road closures will be fully signed in advance.
A21 Route Safety Improvements
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) temporary 40mph speed limit and lane closures on both carriageways of the A21 between Blue Boys Roundabout and Forstall Farm Roundabout from Monday 18 to Friday 22 January. Temporary traffic lights will control traffic which, will be escorted past the work by a convoy vehicle at 10mph.
There will also be an overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of the A21 / A228 Pembury entry and exit slip roads on Monday 25 January. During the southbound exit slip road closures, traffic will be diverted to Blue Boys Roundabout and back to the northbound exit slip road at Pembury. During the southbound entry slip closures traffic will be diverted north to Longfield Roundabout and then return south to Pembury interchange.
On Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 January there will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) temporary 40mph speed limit and lane closures on the Londonbound A21 at Clay Hill Road. Temporary traffic lights will control traffic which will be led past the work by a convoy vehicle at 10mph.
The work is being carried out to enhance the safety of the A21 with new direction signs, road studs and high skid resistance surfacing. The lane closures, temporary speed limit and slip closures will be fully signed in advance.
A27 Mill Hill Overbridge Parapet Work
Work to replace parapets on the Mill Hill overbridge near Brighton continues this week. There are lane closures on one carriageway at a time, with two way temporary traffic lights in operation on the overbridge from Sunday 17 January for six weeks. Due to the nature of the work, the lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the scheme. There will be no restrictions on the A27. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights are fully signed in advance.
A27 Hailsham Embankment Work
Work to repair the embankment adjacent to the Cophall Roundabout continues this week, on the northbound carriageway of Hailsham Road (B2247). There is a northbound lane closure adjacent to the site and a one-way system from Cophall roundabout to maintain traffic flows.
The northbound carriageway of Hailsham Road (B2247) remains closed between Sayerland Road and Cophall roundabout, though it remains open to Southbound traffic. The northbound traffic will be diverted from Sayerland Road eastbound on Hailsham Road, Station Road, Pevensey Road and Dittons Road (B2247) to Golden Jubilee Way. At the roundabout traffic for the A27 will be diverted left (first exit) to the second roundabout to join the westbound A27. This one-way system will remain in place 24 hours a day throughout the work.
A27 Health and Safety Tree Work
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closure with temporary traffic lights in operation while work is carried out on dual carriageway sections of the A27 between Middle Farm, Durrington and Charleston Farm from Monday 25 January to Sunday 7 February. There will also be single lane closures on one carriageway at a time, allowing traffic to use the remaining available lane to pass the work site. This essential work is being carried out only on dead, dying and hazardous trees, which have been identified in our ongoing survey of all trees on our network. It is necessary for this work to be carried out in order to maintain safety for all road users and adjacent landowners. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.
M20 Landscape Work
There will be a various off peak daytime (9.30am – 3.30pm) hard shoulder closures on the M20 for landscape maintenance work. These will be as follows: Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 January – there will be a hard shoulder closure on the coastbound carriageway between junction 8 and 9; Thursday 21 and Friday 22 January – there will be a hard shoulder closure on the Londonbound carriageway between junction 9 and 8. The hard shoulder closure will be fully signed in advance.
A2 Harbledown Resurfacing
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of the A2 / A2050 exit slip road at Harbledown on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 January, while the slip road is resurfaced. The closure will be fully signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route.
A259 Guestling Green Resurfacing
There will be an off-peak daytime lane closure (9.30am – 4pm) of one carriageway at a time on the A259 in Guestling Green, East Sussex on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 January. Two way and three way stop go boards will control traffic and there will be a temporary 40mph speed limit on approach to the work. The work is being carried out to lay anti-skid surfacing on the road. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.
