Fencing, lighting and drainage improvements for the A1 Gateshead Western Bypass

The Highways Agency will begin safety fence repairs, street lighting and drainage system improvements on the Gateshead Western Bypass on Monday, 1st February.

The £1.2 million scheme will take place to the north and south of the Eighton Lodge Junction and will be completed by Friday 7th May.

Work will take place overnight between 10pm and 6am Monday to Thursday and 10pm and 9am Friday to Sunday, there will be a number of overnight lane and carriageway closures. For the safety of drivers a 50 speed restriction will be in operation 24 hours a day as there will be narrow lanes and a temporary safety barrier in place. Moderate delays are expected for road users.

An up and over diversion route will be in place at the junction. When the northbound carriageway is closed, traffic will be diverted via the Eighton Lodge northbound exit slip road and will re-join the A1 via the Eighton Lodge northbound entry slip road. When the southbound carriageway is closed, traffic will be diverted via the Eighton Lodge southbound exit slip road and will re-join the A1 via the Eighton Lodge southbound entry slip road.

Highways Agency project manager, Shaun Cullumbine said: “The scheme will improve the safety fencing, street lighting and drainage along this stretch of the A1. We are carrying out the work at night in order to minimise the disruption to drivers and we ask that drivers take extra care when travelling through the roadworks and along the diversion routes.”
