Highways Agency Traffic Officer receives award from Central Motorway Police Group

A Highways Agency Traffic Officer from the West Midlands was recognised by the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) at an awards ceremony on Tuesday.

Traffic Officer Graham Freeth received the ‘Quality Achiever Award’ in recognition of his work to develop working relationships between the Highways Agency and CMPG officers.

Since November 2008 Graham has worked to improve information sharing and co-ordination with CMPG officers. His knowledge and hard work has improved the relationship between the two services, who are co-located at the Highways Agency’s West Midlands Regional Control Centre in Quinton, Birmingham.
Speaking about the awards, head of the CMPG Chief Superintendent David Jones said:

“We work closely with the Highways Agency and other partners to patrol over 450 miles of motorway. These awards go some way to recognise Officers whose actions go above and beyond the call of duty to help make the region’s motorway network a safer place”.

Jenny Moten, Regional Operations Manager for the Highways Agency also praised Graham:

“We have an excellent working relationship with the Central Motorway Police Group and it is down the hard work and determination of people like Graham who improve links between us.

“On a day to day basis Traffic Officers support the emergency services in managing major incidents on the motorway, and I am delighted that Graham has been recognised for his work in the Control Centre to improve communications between ourselves and CMPG.”

Traffic Officers like Graham, were introduced five years ago in the West Midlands to help keep drivers on the move and tackle incidents which cause a quarter of all congestion. Traffic Officers have a role to play in the control room as well as out on the motorway network which includes setting signs and signals as well as answering calls from the Emergency Roadside Telephones.

Speaking about his award, Traffic Officer Freeth said:

“I am delighted to receive the Quality Achiever Award from CMPG as it reflects our strong relationship, and shows that by working together at Quinton we can deliver real benefits for West Midlands road users.”
