M6 Roadworks update – 01/02/2010
Work to strengthen the hard shoulder on the M6 in the West Midlands is moving into its third phase, with work between Junction 10A (M54) and Junction 12 (Gailey) beginning next week, until the end of March 2010.
The works, which were announced in September 2009, are necessary for the planned roll-out of Managed Motorway schemes on the M6, which will see the hard shoulder opened up to traffic as an additional lane.
The hard shoulder strengthening, along with existing work to deliver hard shoulder running on the M6 between Junction 8 (Rayhall) and J10A (M54) by spring 2011, means that there will be narrow lanes from Junction 8 to Junction 12 of the M6, with a 50mph speed limit in both directions.
Both sets of works are being linked so as to reduce the overall time taken to complete them, and to minimise the impact on the 160,000 vehicles using this stretch of motorway every day.
Project Head, David Grant said:
“By linking these works we will be able to complete the schemes more quickly, and reduce the impact on motorists. As the two schemes are both being delivered on the M6, road users will experience more road works than usual until the end of March.
“I want to reassure drivers that we will do all we can to limit delays, and will take extra measures to keep them informed of what is happening, such as increasing the number of ‘black on yellow’ information signs throughout the roadworks to ensure road users have the most up to date information.
“It takes only four minutes longer to travel through these works at 50mph compared to 70mph, and using narrow lanes allows us to maintain three lanes in each direction rather than having to close lanes during peak periods.”
