Work begins to widen A19 slip road in Sunderland

The Highways Agency is carrying out works to widen the southbound exit slip road from the at its junction with the A690 in . The work is required to accommodate additional vehicles which are predicted to use this slip road following the completion of the Rainton Bridge development in Houghton-le-Spring.

The work will start on Monday, 8 February, and will require the closure of the A19 southbound exit slip road at the A19/A690 Herrington Interchange for 18 weeks.

During the works clearly signed diversion routes will be in place and drivers will be diverted south on the A19, exit the A19 at Murton Interchange then rejoin the A19 northbound, exit the A19 via the northbound exit slip road at A19/A690 Herrington Interchange.

Highways Agency project manager, Mandy Foster, said: “In order to carry out the works as quickly and efficiently as possible, and for the safety of road workers and road users, it is necessary to close the southbound exit slip road at the A19/A690 Herrington Interchange. Once complete, this scheme will alleviate the effect of the extra traffic associated with the Development without increasing traffic delays on the A19.”
