Managed Motorways work on the M6 North of Birmingham
Highways Agency will close sections of the M6 overnight on 5 and 6 February in order to remove existing overhead gantries, in readiness to install new gantries, signs and signals for the Managed Motorways scheme.
From 10pm on Friday 5 February to 8am on Saturday 6 February the northbound M6 will be closed between Junctions 8 (Rayhall) and 10 (Walsall), including the M5 northbound link to the M6 northbound. The M6 northbound entry slip road at Junction 9 will also be closed.
From 8pm on Saturday 6 February to 10am on Sunday 7 February the southbound M6 will be closed between Junctions 10 and 8, including the M6 southbound link to the M5 southbound. The M6 southbound entry slip road at Junction 9 will also be closed.
Similar closures on sections of the M6 will be employed over the next few months to remove old gantries, strengthen sections of the hard shoulder, create emergency refuge areas and install the new style gantries and signs that form part of the Managed Motorways scheme.
Diversion routes have been agreed with the local highways authorities and will be clearly signposted.
Highways Agency Project Manager, Paul Unwin, said:
“To ensure the safety of motorists and to minimise the impact on the 160,000 vehicles which use the M6 on a daily basis, works need to be undertaken at night when traffic is lightest.
“Night works in this area will continue over the coming weeks to remove old and install new overhead gantries. We are making every effort to avoid disturbance to nearby residents and continue to give advance notification of the works.
“Once completed, the Managed Motorways scheme will bring many benefits to thousands of motorists including reduced congestion, reduced pollution and improved journey time reliability.”
Hard shoulder strengthening, along with existing work to deliver hard shoulder running on the M6 between Junction 8 (Ray Hall) and J10A (M54) by spring 2011, means that there will be narrow lanes from Junction 8 to Junction 12 of the M6, with a 50mph speed limit in both directions.
