Weekly Summary of Roadworks in Kent & Sussex – 03/02/2010

A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work

All of the following work is dependant on suitable weather conditions.

A27 Worthing to Brighton Street Lighting There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) narrow lanes with a mobile lane closure on one carriageway at a time at two locations on the A27 at Pad, Hangleton Junction, Devils Dyke Interchange and Patcham Interchange from Monday 01 February to Friday 05 February. The work is to upgrade the current lighting units and traffic bollards. The narrow lanes and mobile lane closure will be fully signed in advance.

M20 Junction 8 Ashford Road
The A20 Ashford Road bridge, which runs above the M20 junction 8 overbridge will be closed from Wednesday 11 January until mid February. The work is being carried out in order to replace the parapets, safety barrier around the bridge and stabilize the embankment to ensure its structural safety. During the closure traffic will be sent on a short diversion through to the adjacent roundabout. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained at all times.

A2 Boughton Hill Fog Detectors
There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closures on either carriageway of the A2 at Boughton Hill, while work is carried out to install new fog detectors and advance warning signs. Work is being carried out each night Monday – Friday and will be complete by 5 February. The fog detectors will sense moisture in the air, which will then trigger a fog sign to flash up. This will war drivers if visibility is reduced on the road ahead. The lane closure will be fully signed in advance.

A20 Pull Off Points
There will be various overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures on the coastbound and London bound carriageway of the A20 between Roundhill Tunnel and Dover from Wednesday 13 January to Saturday 20 February. The work is being carried out to provide permanent areas for maintenance vehicles to park off the main carriageway. This will improve safety road users and members of the workforce as maintenance vehicles will be out of the way of the main flow of traffic. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Crab Hill Lane Overbridge
There will be various lane closures and temporary traffic lights on Crab Hill Lane from Monday 4 January until Friday 5 Feb. The work is to replace the parapets and safety barrier on the northbound M23 at Crab Hill overbridge. The lights will operate continuously through this period. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A21 Route Safety Improvements
On Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 February there will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) temporary 40mph speed limit and lane closures on the Londonbound A21 at Clay Hill Road. Temporary traffic lights will control traffic which will be led past the work by a convoy vehicle at 10mph.The work is being carried out to enhance the safety of the A21 with new direction signs, road studs and high skid resistance surfacing. The lane closures, temporary speed limit and slip closures will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Mill Hill Overbridge Parapet Work
Work to replace parapets on the Mill Hill overbridge near Brighton continues this week. There are lane closures on one carriageway at a time, with two way temporary traffic lights in operation on the overbridge from Sunday 17 January for six weeks. Due to the nature of the work, the lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the scheme. There will be no restrictions on the A27. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights are fully signed in advance.

A27 Hailsham Embankment Work
Work to repair the embankment adjacent to the Cophall Roundabout continues this week, on the northbound carriageway of Hailsham Road (B2247). There is a northbound lane closure adjacent to the site and a one-way system from Cophall roundabout to maintain traffic flows.
The northbound carriageway of Hailsham Road (B2247) remains closed between Sayerland Road and Cophall roundabout, though it remains open to Southbound traffic. The northbound traffic will be diverted from Sayerland Road eastbound on Hailsham Road, Station Road, Pevensey Road and Dittons Road (B2247) to Golden Jubilee Way. At the roundabout traffic for the A27 will be diverted left (first exit) to the second roundabout to join the westbound A27.

This one-way system will remain in place 24 hours a day throughout the work.

A27 Vegetation Work
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closure with temporary traffic lights in operation while work is carried out on dual carriageway sections of the A27 between Middle Farm, Durrington and Charleston Farm from Monday 25 January to Sunday 7 February. There will also be single lane closures on one carriageway at a time, allowing traffic to use the remaining available lane to pass the work site. On Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February   Work will be carried out overnight (8pm – 6am) at the A27 Lewes Road junction with the A2270 overnight, with lane closures and three way temporary traffic lights in place to allow road users to pass the works site safely. This work is being carried out on dead, dying and hazardous trees, which have been identified in our ongoing survey of all trees on our network. It is necessary for this work to be carried out in order to maintain safety for all road users and adjacent landowners. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A21 Mumpumps Crossing Improvements
There will be alternate overnight (8pm – 6am) northbound and southbound lane closures of the A21 at Mumpumps. South of Flimwell, in East Sussex from Monday 1 to Thursday 4 February  Road users will be controlled past the work site by two way temporary traffic lights.  The works are to install new paving at the pedestrian crossing point and signs at the side of the road.  The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

M2 Junction 5 Slip Road resurfacing
There will be a full overnight closure of the M2 London bound entry slip road for junction 5 on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February between 8pm and 5am.  During this time road users wishing to join the M2 London bound at junction 5 will be diverted to travel coastbound to junction 6 where they will then rejoin the M2 London  bound.  The works are to resurface the whole of the entry slip road as well as replace all road studs and road markings.  The slip road closure will be signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route.

A249 Sheppey
Accident damaged barrier will be repaired on the A249 dual carriageway in on Thursday 28 January.   The work, which is weather dependent, will be carried out between 9.30am and 3.30pm and will finish the same day.

During the work, lane 2 of the northbound A249 dual carriageway between Bobbing junction and the Sheppey Crossing will be closed to provide a safe working area.  Lane 1 remains open to traffic. 

A26 Route Signing Improvements
From Wednesday  3 to Thursday 4 February there will be overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures at various locations on the A26 on one carriageway at a time with traffic controlled past the works by two way temporary traffic lights.  The works are to improve route signing and road markings along the A26.  The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A21 Route Safety Improvements
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) temporary 40mph speed limit and lane closures on both carriageways of the A21 between Blue Boys Roundabout and Forstall Farm Roundabout from Monday 8 to Tuesday 9 February. Temporary traffic lights will control traffic which, will be escorted past the work by a convoy vehicle at 10mph. The work is being carried out to enhance the safety of the A21 with new direction signs, road studs and high skid resistance surfacing. The lane closures and temporary speed limit will be fully signed in advance.

M20 Saltwood Overbridge parapet works
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of the inside lane of both carriageways of the M20 around junction 11 for eight weeks from Monday 1 February.  There will be off-peak temporary traffic lights at times during the day on Saltwood Bridge. The work involves replacing the existing parapet and deck surface on Saltwood Bridge and constructing new ramps to both ends of the bridge approaches.

A21 Cuckoo Lane
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closure on the A21 Lamberhurst Quarter at its junction with Cuckoo Lane on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February. Temporary traffic lights will control traffic which will be led past the works by a convoy vehicle at 10mph.  There will also be a 40mph speed limit on approach to the works on the Londonbound and coastbound carriageway.  The works are being carried out to resurface a section of road to ensure the ongoing safety of all road users.  The lane closure, convoy working and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A21 Kippings Cross Roundabout Resurfacing There will be an overnight (9pm – 5am) single lane closure on the Londonbound carriageway of the A21 on the approach to Kippings Cross Roundabout with a temporary 50mph speed limit in place from Monday 1 to Friday 5 February.  Road users will be led past the site of the works at 10mph by a convoy vehicle.  There will also be a temporary overnight closure of the B2160 Maidstone Road and of the Dundale Road at their junctions with the A21 throughout the duration of the works. The works are being carried out to resurface the A21 carriageway and apply high friction surfacing around the A21 Kippings Cross roundabout, at the junction with the B2160 Maidstone Road and Dundale Road.  The lane closure, speed limit, convoy working will be signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route for the temporary road closure.

A21 Hastings Vegetation Clearance
There will be some overnight (8pm – 6am) full carriageway closures of the A21 near The Ridge at St Leonards, Hastings, East Sussex from Tuesday 2 to Friday 5 February.  The works are being carried out to stop erosion and repair a slope on the A21 southbound verge near The Ridge.  The carriageway closures will have a fully signed diversion route.

A259 Broadoak Lane Resurfacing
There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures on the A259 Broadoak Lane in Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex with temporary traffic lights from Monday 8 to Friday 12 February. Road users escorted past the works at 10mph. At times during the work it will be necessary to close the junction with the A259. The works are to resurface the road and replace the road studs.  The lane closures, temporary traffic lights and convoy working will be signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route in place for the road closure.

A27 Safety Works
There will be overnight (8pm – 5am) lane closure on one carriageway with traffic will be controlled past the site by two-way traffic lights on the A27 between Grove Lodge Roundabout and Hillside Avenue, in Offington, West Sussex from Monday 8 to Thursday 11 February.  At junctions where the surveys are being carried out there will be 3 or 4 way traffic lights controlling traffic.  The works are to carry out surveys to determine the road condition.  The lane closure and traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Berwick Roundabout Street Lighting Works There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closures around A27 near the Berwick (Drusillas) roundabout in East Sussex from Monday 8 to Friday 12 February.  Traffic will be controlled past the works via 4 way temporary traffic lights. The works are to carry out power supply works for street lighting.  The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Chichester Road Earth Works
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am)  lane one closure of the A27 Chichester Road eastbound carriageway with temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit in place to allow road users past the works site from Monday 8 to Friday 12 February.  The works are to carry out vegetation maintenance.  The lane closure and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.
