Weekly Summary of Roadworks in Kent & Sussex – 10/02/2010

All of the following work is dependant on suitable weather conditions.

M20 Junction 8 Ashford Road
The A20 Ashford Road bridge, which runs above the M20 junction 8 overbridge will be closed until mid February. The work is being carried out in order to replace the parapets, safety barrier around the bridge and stabilize the embankment to ensure its structural safety. During the closure traffic will be sent on a short diversion through to the adjacent roundabout. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained at all times.

A2 Boughton Hill Fog Detectors
There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closures on either carriageway of the A2 at Boughton Hill, while work is carried out to install new fog detectors and advance warning signs. Work is being carried out each night Monday – Friday and will be complete by 5 February. The lane closure will be fully signed in advance.

A20 Pull Off Points
There will be various overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures on the coastbound and London bound carriageway of the A20 between Roundhill Tunnel and Dover from Wednesday 13 January to Saturday 20 February. The work is being carried out to provide permanent areas for maintenance vehicles to park off the main carriageway. This will improve safety road users and members of the workforce as maintenance vehicles will be out of the way of the main flow of traffic. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Mill Hill Overbridge Parapet Work
Work to replace parapets on the Mill Hill overbridge near Brighton continues this week. There are lane closures on one carriageway at a time, with two way temporary traffic lights in operation on the overbridge from Sunday 17 January for six weeks. Due to the nature of the work, the lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the scheme. There will be no restrictions on the A27. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights are fully signed in advance.

A27 Hailsham Embankment Work
Work to repair the embankment adjacent to the Cophall Roundabout continues this week, on the northbound carriageway of Hailsham Road (B2247). There is a northbound lane closure adjacent to the site and a one-way system from Cophall roundabout to maintain traffic flows.
The northbound carriageway of Hailsham Road (B2247) remains closed between Sayerland Road and Cophall roundabout, though it remains open to Southbound traffic. The northbound traffic will be diverted from Sayerland Road eastbound on Hailsham Road, Station Road, Pevensey Road and Dittons Road (B2247) to Golden Jubilee Way. At the roundabout traffic for the A27 will be diverted left (first exit) to the second roundabout to join the westbound A27.

This one-way system will remain in place 24 hours a day throughout the work.

A27 Vegetation Work
On Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February there will be overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures at the A27 Lewes Road junction with the A2270 and three way temporary traffic lights in place to allow road users to pass the works site safely. This work is being carried out on dead, dying and hazardous trees, which have been identified in our ongoing survey of all trees on our network. It is necessary for this work to be carried out in order to maintain safety for all road users and adjacent landowners. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

M20 Saltwood Overbridge parapet works
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of the inside lane of both carriageways of the M20 around junction 11 for eight weeks from Monday 1 February.  There will be off-peak temporary traffic lights at times during the day on Saltwood Bridge. The work involves replacing the existing parapet and deck surface on Saltwood Bridge and constructing new ramps to both ends of the bridge approaches.

A259 Broadoak Lane Resurfacing
There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures on the A259 Broadoak Lane in Bexhill-on-Sea in East with temporary traffic lights from Monday 15 February to 19 February  Road users will be escorted past the works at 10mph. At times during the work it will be necessary to close the junction with the A259. The works are to resurface the road and replace the road studs.  The lane closures, temporary traffic lights and convoy working will be signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route in place for the road closure.

A27 Safety Works
There will be overnight (8pm – 5am) lane closure on one carriageway with traffic will be controlled past the site by two-way traffic lights on the A27 between Grove Lodge Roundabout and Hillside Avenue, in Offington, West Sussex from Monday 8 to Thursday 11 February.  At junctions where the surveys are being carried out there will be 3 or 4 way traffic lights controlling traffic.  The works are to carry out surveys to determine the road condition.  The lane closure and traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Berwick Roundabout Street Lighting Works There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closures around A27 near the Berwick (Drusillas) roundabout in East Sussex from Monday 8 to Friday 12 February.  Traffic will be controlled past the works via 4 way temporary traffic lights. The works are to carry out power supply works for street lighting.  The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Chichester Road Earth Works
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am)  lane one closure of the A27 Chichester Road eastbound carriageway with temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit in place to allow road users past the works site from Monday 8 to Friday 12 February.  The works are to carry out vegetation maintenance.  The lane closure and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A2 Overnight Maintenance works
Works continue to carry out a series of maintenance works on the A2 between Brenley Corner and Dover from Monday 8 February to the end of April.  These will involve resurfacing and replacing the road studs on various sections of the A2 and construction of a number of maintenance vehicle parking bays. For the safety of road users and the workforce there will be various overnight lane closures as well as separate weeknight carriageway closures on either the coastbound or Londonbound carriageway of the A2 for various sections as detailed below.  The closures will run from 8pm to 5am each night. 

Week commencing 8 February
From Monday 8 to Sunday 14 February there is due to be an overnight lane one closure on the A2 Londonbound between Wootton and Barham.

Week commencing 15 February
There will be an overnight lane one closure on the Londonbound carriageway between Whitfield and Coldred from Monday 15 to Saturday 20 February.  During this time, two-way traffic lights will be used at Coldred to control traffic.

From Monday 15 to Friday 19 February there will be an overnight closure of the coastbound carriageway between Bridge and Barham.  During this time, road users will be diverted from the M2 junction 7 Brenley Corner to the A299, then onto the A256 along to Honeywood Interchange. Road users travelling to Dover will be directed by variable message signs to use the M20 and A20 from the M25 and M2.

M2 junction 6-7 resurfacing
There continues to be various forms of overnight  traffic management for works to resurface the M2 on both carriageways between junctions 6 and 7 from Monday 8 February for two weeks. On some nights either the eastbound or westbound carriageway between junctions 6 and 7 will be closed and road users will follow a fully signed diversion route.
When the eastbound carriageway is closed road users wishing to continue on the eastbound M2 past junction 7 will be diverted at junction 6 onto the A251 northbound to join the A2 Canterbury Road eastbound to rejoin the M2/A2 at junction 7.
When the westbound carriageway is closed, road users wishing to continue on the westbound M2 past junction 6 will be diverted at junction 7 onto the A2 Canterbury Road westbound to join the A251 southbound. They will then rejoin the M2 westbound carriageway at junction 6.
On other dates throughout the work there will be lane closures on either the eastbound or westbound M2 carriageway with hardshoulder running and a 50mph temporary speed limit in place.

A20 Woolcomber Street Pedestrian Crossing upgrade There will be overnight (8pm – 6am)  lane two closures at times on the westbound carriageway of the A20 Townwall Street from Monday 8 to Thursday 11 February..  Road users wishing to turn right into Woolcomber Street will be diverted to York Street roundabout and return on the eastbound carriageway of A20 Townwall Street to turn into Woolcomber Street.  Road users wishing to turn right out of Woolcomber Street will be diverted to Eastern Docks roundabout and return on the westbound carriageway of the A20 Townwall Street.  There will then be overnight three-way traffic lights controlling traffic into and out of Woolcomber Street and along the A20 Townwall Street for the rest of the works. The works are to upgrade the existing crossing with new push button units and replace the signal heads with new brighter displays.  The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Middle Farm to Berwick ground surveys There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closure on one carriageway and traffic will be controlled past the site by two way traffic lights between Berwick roundabout and Middle Farm, East Sussex from Monday 15 February for two weeks.  The works are to carry out ground surveys.  The lane closure and traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Polegate ground surveys
There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures at the A27 Polegate Bypass between its junction with the A2270 and west of Cophall roundabout in East Sussex from Monday 15 to Friday 19 February.  The works are to carry out ground surveys. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A23 Hickstead slip road resurfacing
There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of the A23 northbound exit slip road on Monday 15 February to Friday 19 February. The works are to resurface and relay road markings and road studs.  The closure will be signed in advance with a fully signed diversion route.

A259 New Winchelsea Road resurfacing
There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) alternate single lane closures on the A259 New Winchelsea Road near Rye in East Sussex from Wednesday 17 February to Friday 19 February.  There will also be temporary two way traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit in place to allow the works to be carried out. Road users will be escorted past the works site at 10mph in convoy.  The works are to resurface the road and lay anti-skid surfacing. The lane closures, traffic lights and 40mph speed limit will all be fully signed in advance.

A27 Southwick Tunnel Routine Maintenance The A27 Southwick Tunnel will be closed overnight (8pm – 6am) on Friday 19 and Saturday 20  February for routine maintenance work. There may also be an overnight lane closure on the eastbound carriageway on Monday 22 February for the removal of equipment.  All closures will be fully signed in advance, fully signed diversion routes will be provided
