Fire-damaged drains to be repaired during weekend closure of A1 southbound carriageway at Blyth, Nottinghamshire

Work to repair fire-damaged drains on the A1 at Blyth in north Nottinghamshire is due to take place on the weekend of Friday 26 to Sunday 28 February.

There will be a full closure of the A1 southbound carriageway between the exit and entry slip roads at the Blyth junction (A1/A614) from 10pm on Friday, 26 February until 12pm (noon) on Sunday 28, February. The diversion for road users will be up and over the junction via the slip roads. All other traffic movements at the junction will be maintained.

The work involves lining concrete pipes and rebuilding a manhole chamber on the east side of the junction which were damaged after a lorry carrying paint thinners overturned and caught fire last August.

Highways Agency project manager Robert Murphy said:

“The thinners poured into the drainage system and ignited. Images from high definition CCTV surveys showed that the intensity of the heat from the fire has affected the durability of the pipe work which is why we need to go in and repair the damage.

“Although the work involves a full closure of the A1 southbound, this approach causes the least disruption to road users. It means we can do the work more efficiently, as the alternative would be setting up a contraflow which would affect many more road users for a much longer period.

“The diversion route is a short, simple one as vehicles will use the exit and entry slip roads to go up and over the junction. However, road users should still allow extra time for their journeys as there are likely to be queues as people using local roads try and cross the eastern roundabout.”
