Highways Agency to make £210,000 improvements to cabling system on M55 and M6 at Broughton in Lancashire

Work starts next weekend on a £210,000 project will upgrade the ducts and chambers taking communications cables beneath the and at Broughton near Preston in Lancashire.

The work involves moving channels for cabling used for equipment such as electronic signs and emergency telephones and will mean various lane closures at different times on almost a mile of the M55 eastbound from Junction 1 to M6 Junction 32, and a mile and a half of the M6 northbound from Junction 32.

The project, beginning on Sunday 28th February, will take a month to complete.

For the safety of drivers and the roadworkers there will be some closures of the hard shoulder and lane one on either the M55 and M6, but not on both at the same time. There will also be some overnight closures of the M55 eastbound to M6 northbound link road. There will be a mandatory 50mph speed limit in operation through the roadworks.

When the link road is closed overnight, traffic wishing to go north on the M6 from the M55 will be directed off the M55 at junction 1 and northwards along the A6 to M6 Junction 33.

Highways Agency project manager James Theobalds said: “We ask drivers to be patient and take care to keep to the 50mph speed limit through the roadworks. We only ever introduce a lower speed limit to ensure their safety, as well as the safety of the people doing this essential work.”
