Weekly Summary of Roadworks in Kent & Sussex – 04/03/2010

A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work

All of the following work is dependent on suitable weather conditions.

M20 Junction 8 Ashford Road

The A20 Ashford Road Bridge, which runs above the M20 junction 8 overbridge will be closed until mid March. The work is being carried out in order to replace the parapets, safety barrier around the bridge and stabilize the embankment to ensure its structural safety. During the closure traffic will be sent on a short diversion through to the adjacent roundabout. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained at all times.

A27 Mill Hill Overbridge Parapet Work

Work to replace parapets on the Mill Hill overbridge near Brighton continues this week. There are lane closures on one carriageway at a time, with two way temporary traffic lights in operation on the overbridge from Sunday 17 January for seven weeks. Due to the nature of the work, the lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the scheme. There will be no restrictions on the A27. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights are fully signed in advance.

M20 Saltwood Overbridge parapet works

There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) closure of the inside lane of both carriageways of the M20 around junction 11 for eight weeks from Monday 1 February.  There will be off-peak temporary traffic lights at times during the day on Saltwood Bridge. The work involves replacing the existing parapet and deck surface on Saltwood Bridge and constructing new ramps to both ends of the bridge approaches.

A2 Overnight Maintenance works

Works continue to carry out a series of maintenance works on the A2 between Brenley Corner and Dover from Monday 8 February to the end of April.  These will involve resurfacing and replacing the road studs on various sections of the A2 and construction of a number of maintenance vehicle parking bays. For the safety of road users and the workforce there will be various overnight lane closures as well as separate weeknight carriageway closures on either the coastbound or London bound carriageway of the A2 for various sections as detailed below.  The closures will run from 8pm to 5am each night. 

Week commencing 1 March

There will be various lane closures at Whitfield from Monday 1 March to Friday 5 March.  During this time, two-way traffic lights will be used to control traffic.There will be a lane one closure for a small section of Jubilee Way from Monday 1 to Friday 12 March.There will also be a lane one closure with a temporary 50mph speed limit on the Londonbound carriageway at Boughton from Monday 1 March to Wednesday 3 March.

From Monday 1 to Wednesday 3 March there will be a closure of the Londonbound carriageway between Barham and Bridge. During this time road users will be diverted at Honeywood Interchange to the A256 along to the A299 and back at the M2 junction 7 Brenley Corner

From Thursday 4 up to Tuesday 9 March there will be a closure of the coastbound carriageway between Harbledown and Bridge.  During this time traffic will be diverted to the A2050 New Dover Road along to St George’s place onto the A28 Upper Bridge Street, Rhodaus Town, Pin Hill Way, back to the A2050 Rheims Way to rejoin the A2 at Harbledown

Week commencing 8 March

There will be a single lane closure of the Londonbound carriageway at Coldred from Monday 8 to Wednesday 10 March. During this time, two-way traffic lights will be used to control traffic with a temporary 40mph speed limit in place.

There will be a single lane closure of the coastbound carriageway at Coldred from Thursday 11 to Friday 12 March. During this time, two-way traffic lights will be used to control traffic with a 40mph speed limit in place.

There will be a lane one closure on the coastbound carriageway at Bridge from Monday 8 to Friday 12 March.There will be a single lane closure with two-way traffic lights just before Whitfield from Monday 8 to Friday 12 March. 

From Monday 8 to Wednesday 10 March there will be a closure of the coastbound carriageway between Harbledown and Bridge.  During this time, traffic will be diverted to the A2050 New Dover Road along to St George’s place onto the A28 Upper Bridge Street, Rhodaus Town, Pin Hill Way, back to the A2050 Rheims Way to rejoin the A2 at Harbledown.

M23 Crabbet Park Underbridge works

There will be overnight (8pm-  6am) lane closures on the M23 Crabbet Park Underbridge between junctions 10 and 10a near Crawley, West from Sunday 7 March for two weeks. There will be daytime hard shoulder closures to replace the parapet and safety fence on Crabbet Park underbridge.  The lane closures and hard shoulder closures will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Lewes to Polegate Energy Saving Street Lighting There will be various overnight (8pm and 6am) narrow lanes and lane closures in place on the A27 between Lewes and Polegate in East  Sussex from Monday 15 February for three weeks. At some locations a short diversion route will be in place whilst energy saving street lighting work takes place.

There will also be temporary traffic lights when work takes place on the Berwick Roundabout.

A259 Pett Road High Friction Surfacing

There will be overnight (8pm and 6am) alternate single lane closures on the A259 with temporary three way traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit in place to allow retexturing works to be carried out on the A259 junction with Friars Hill/ Pett Road near Hastings  East Sussex from Monday 1 March for three nights.

A27 Chichester to Arundel Energy Saving Street Lighting Work starts on Monday 22 February for five weeks to replace the current street lighting lanterns, sign lights and traffic bollards with more energy efficient ones on the A27 between Chichester and Arundel in West Sussex.

While work is carried out at each location there will be overnight (8pm until 6am) narrow lanes, mobile lane closures or temporary traffic lights in operation.

A21 Sedlescombe to Hastings Resurfacing

From Monday 22 February for three weeks there will be lane closures of one carriageway at a time with a temporary speed limit of 40mph and temporary traffic lights will be in use and road users will be escorted past the works at 10mph whilst overnight (8pm until 6am) resurfacing work is carried out on the A21 between Sedlescombe and Hastings in East Sussex.

Whilst resurfacing is taking place near local road junctions on the A21, it will be necessary to close the junctions. Road users will follow fully signed local road diversion routes,

A20 Overnight Closures

There will be overnight (8.00pm until 6.00am) closures of the A20 from Monday 1 to Wednesday 3 March.

On Tuesday 2 March and Wednesday 3 March there will be overnight closures of the coastbound carriageway from the M20 junction 13 to the A20 Courtwood junction.  Traffic will be directed from M20 junction 13 to the A20, A259, A260 and B2011 to return back on the A20 at Courtwood junction. The diversion will be fully signed.  The works are for routine maintenance and tunnel lighting inspections.

M20 Hall Road Noise Barrier

Works continue until late March to extend the existing noise barrier across Hall Road overbridge alongside the M20 at junction 5.  The noise barrier will be extended by 200 metres eastwards and just beyond it on the London bound and coastbound carriageway to create a solid barrier to reduce noise levels for local residents.

To enable the installation of the barrier to take place some very minor vegetation clearance will need to be carried out.  This will involve some pruning of shrubs near the motorway boundary and will be away from any residents’ properties.

For the safety of road users and the workforce, there will be a 24/7 hard shoulder closure and narrow lanes in place with a temporary 50mph speed limit on the London bound and coastbound carriageway for the duration of the works.  There will also be off-peak daytime single lane closures with two way traffic lights from 9.30am to 3.30pm for three weeks on Hall Road whilst the works are carried out.

A2 Sign Storage

There will be off-peak daytime lane closures on the A2 at various locations between 9.30am and 3.30pm at different locations from Monday 1 March to the end of March.  There will be no works at weekends.  The lane closures will be as follows:

A2 around Whitfield Bypass at its junction with the A256 from Monday 1 to Friday  5 March

A2 around Whitfield Roundabout at its junction with Whitfield Hill from Monday 8 to Tuesday  9 March

A2 at its junction with the A260 from Wednesday 3 to Thursday 11 March.

A2 at its junction with Coldharbour Lane from Wednesday 10 to Tuesday 23 March

A2 at its junction with the A2050 from Wednesday 24 to Wednesday 31 March.

The work is to install sign sheds at the side of the road for storing signs for use in emergencies.  The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

M23 junction 9 Gatwick Spur Left Hand Turn Work continues to creating a new segregated left turn lane for road users travelling from junction 9a to junction 9 then join the northbound M23 on the near Gatwick, West Sussex from 21 February for five weeks.

In order for the new lane to be created the existing two lane carriageway will be widened to three lanes on the junction 9 roundabout. Work will also be carried out on the drainage system, new signage, road markings and the safety barrier works at the same time. 

For the safety of road users and will be 24 hour narrow lanes at the junction. The north circulatory will also be closed meaning that road users exiting the M23 northbound at junction 9 will not be able to continue across the junction to return onto the northbound junction 9 entry slip or enter the M23 southbound via the Junction 9 entry slip road. They will be diverted to junction 9a westbound to return on the eastbound carriageway to access these slip roads.  The works are to create a new segregated left turn lane for road users travelling from junction 9a to junction 9 then join the northbound M23 on the near Gatwick.  The narrow lanes and slip closure will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Energy Saving Street Lighting

Works continue overnight to replace the current street lighting lanterns, sign lights and traffic bollards along the A27 between Chichester and Arundel with more energy efficient ones until 29 March.  For the safety of road users and the workforce, whilst work is carried out each location there will be narrow lanes, mobile lane closures or temporary traffic lights in operation.  These will all be fully signed in advance.

M2 junction 5- 6 turnaround points

Works continue to install emergency crossing points across the central reservation at three locations between the M2 junction 5 at Sittingbourne and junction 6 at Faversham.  There remains a 24/7 lane 2 closure with a temporary 50mph speed limit on both carriageways of the M2 between junction 5 and junction 6 from Friday 19th February to 16th March.  At this time traffic will run in narrow lanes in the hardshoulder and lane one which is fully signed in advance.

M2 Primrose Lane Overbridge Waterproofing There will be 24/7 lane closures with temporary traffic lights in place on Primrose Lane overbridge which runs over the M2 from Monday 22 February to Friday 12 March.  The work involves removal and replacement of the existing road surface and waterproof layer on the overbridge. The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A2 Cobham Brewers Road Flyover Resurfacing There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closures with temporary traffic lights in place on the A2 Brewers Road Flyover at Cobham in for two weekends over the following dates.

Friday 05 March to Monday 08 March

Friday 12 March to Monday 15 March

Friday 19 March to Monday 22 March

Friday 26 March to Monday 29 March

Due to the nature of the works, good weather is needed to be able to complete them and any two weekends of the above could be used if conditions are not suitable on the previous weekend.  The work involves removal and replacement of the existing road surface and waterproof layer on the flyover.  The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Sussex Pad Improvements

There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) lane closure on both carriageways, temporary 40mph speed limit and closures of the gaps in the central reservation on the A27 Old Shoreham Road near the Sussex Pad junction at Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex from Monday 1 March to Friday 5 March.  The works are to replace road studs and signs.  The lane closures and temporary speed limit will be fully signed in advance

A2 Boughton Footway

There will be an overnight (8pm – 5am) lane one closure of the A2 coastbound carriageway at Boughton with a 50mph speed limit in operation from Monday 1 March to Friday 5 March.  The works are to reconstruct a 100 metre section of the footway.  The lane closure and temporary speed limit will be fully signed in advance.

A2070 Sign Storage

There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closures adjacent to sites between the A2070 / A2042 junction and the M20 junction 10 in Ashford, Kent from Monday 1 March for three and a half weeks. No works will take place at weekends.  The locations and programme of works are as follows:

A2070 at M20 junction 10 Interchange from Monday 1 to Thursday 4 March.

A2070 Orbital Business Park from Monday 1 to Friday 12 March.

A2070 Cloverleaf Interchange from Monday 15 to Wednesday 24 March.

The works are to construct new sign sheds at the side of the A2070.  The sign shed will be used to store signs for use when a closure or diversion route needs to be implemented as well as for use with general maintenance works.  The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A20 Roundhill Tunnel Routine Maintenance Work There will be overnight (8.00pm until 6.00am) closures of the Roundhill Tunnel on the westbound side from Monday 1 to Tuesday 2 March and on the eastbound side from Wednesday 3 to Thursday 4 March. Whilst the closures are in place there will be a fully signed diversion route in operation. The works are for routine maintenance and tunnel lighting inspections.

A259 / A2070 Rye to Ashford Energy Saving Street Lighting There will be off-peak daytime (9.30am – 4pm) lane closures on dual carriageway sections and lane closures with temporary traffic lights on single carriageway sections of the A259 and A2070 between Rye in East Sussex and Ashford in Kent from Monday 1 March for two weeks.  The works are to replace the current lights on signs and traffic bollards with more energy efficient lighting.  The lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A2 Wrotham Road

There will be an off-peak daytime (9.30am – 3.30pm) single lane closure with temporary traffic lights on the A227 Wrotham Road that runs underneath the A2 at Wrotham from Monday 1 March for three weeks.  The work involves the repair of the bridge walls and repainting the parapets to ensure the long term condition of the structure.  Landscape drainage improvements will also be made at this time.  The lane closure and temporary traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A21 Sign Storage

There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) single lane closures adjacent to various sites on the A21 from Friday 5 March for three and a half weeks. No work will take place at weekends. The locations and programme of work  follows:

A21 at its junction with the A264 / A228 Pembury Road Interchange from Friday 5 March to Friday 19 March.

A21 at Morelys Interchange from Monday 22 March to Wednesday 31 March.

A21 at the A25 Westerham junction from Thursday 25 March to Wednesday 31 March.

The work is to construct new sign sheds at the side of the A21. The sign sheds will be used to store signs for use when a closure or diversion route needs to be implemented as well as for use with general maintenance works. The lane closures will be fully signed in advance.

A259 Rye South Undercliff and Guestling Green Retexturing There will be an off-peak daytime (9.30am – 4pm) lane closure of one carriageway at a time with two way stop and go boards manually controlled and 3 way stop and go boards on the A259 South Undercliff in Rye and at Guestling Green, East Sussex on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 March.  There will also be a temporary speed limit of 40mph.  The works are to lay anti-skid surfacing on the road.  The lane closures and stop go boards will be fully signed in advance.

A259 New Winchelsea Road Bend High Friction Surfacing There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) alternate single lane closures on the A259 New Winchelsea Road near Rye in East Sussex on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 March. There will be temporary two way traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit in place to allow the works to be carried out. Road users will be escorted past the works site at 10mph in convoy.  The works will involve retexturing the carriageway.  The single lane closures and traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.

A27 Upper Brighton Road Lancing Resurfacing There will be an overnight (8pm – 6am) westbound carriageway closure of the A27 Upper Brighton Road with two-way temporary traffic lights on Monday 8 March.  There will be a 40 mph temporary speed limit in place and road users escorted past the works at 10mph in convoy.  The works are to resurface the carriageway.  The carriageway closure and traffic lights will be fully signed in advance.
