Highways Agency to repair the Shelton New Road Bridge over the A500 near Etruria and undertake improvements to the A5045

Highways Agency contractors will begin works on the Shelton New Road bridge (A5045), where it crosses the A500 between Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme, on 15th March 2010 and work is expected to take 12 weeks to complete.

Essential repairs to the bridge structure, waterproofing and drainage will be undertaken prior to resurfacing and the renewal of road markings for improved road safety.

Preparation will necessitate removal of the old surfacing, kerbing and waterproofing on the bridge span before repairs to the bridge deck and joints can begin.

Working hours will be from 0700 to 1900 Monday to Saturday and from 0900 to 1500 each Sunday. Any necessary diversions affecting the entry and exit slip roads of the A500/A5045 will be clearly signposted while alternating single-lane traffic flow over the bridge will be maintained during the works.

While the work is taking place there will be a 20 mph speed limit in operation, on Shelton New Road and the A500 sliproads, for the safety of the workforce and road users.

Bus stops adjacent to the west of the bridge will be closed while the work is taking place and the local authority will temporarily relocate those bus stops.  Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained at all times.

Howard Todd, Highways Agency project sponsor, said;

“The Highways Agency is committed to minimising delays when carrying out road improvements and this scheme will not only extend the life of the bridge but also improve road safety due to the new surface and surface-water drainage.

“Drivers are reminded to take extra care through road works and to observe the temporary speed limits in place. Temporary road signs will notify motorists of how to proceed through the works or via any necessary diversions.”
