Good News for Motorists – M4 Works between J18 and 19 completed eight days ahead of schedule

Work to replace 4.3 miles of steel central reservation barrier with a safer concrete barrier between junction 18 (Bath) and 19 (M32 Bristol) of the M4 has been completed a week ahead of schedule and half a million pounds under budget.

A combination of careful planning and good weather has helped the project team complete earlier than scheduled and work finished on Sunday instead of March 23.

The early completion has also enabled a £500,000 saving on the construction budget of £5.6 million.

Highways Agency Project Sponsor, Dave Frampton, said, “This early completion is good news for all our customers who use this stretch of the M4 and I would like to thank road users for their patience whilst we carried out these vital works.

“The new barrier is designed to improve safety by reducing the risk of cross-overs. It will also require less maintenance.”

During the work, which started January 2 three lanes remained open in each direction with a 50 mph speed limit controlled by speed cameras but all restriction were lifted over the weekend.
