A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work
All of the following work is dependent on suitable weather conditions.
M4 between Membury Service Area and Junction 14 Work to harden the central reserve and install a central reserve concrete barrier is continuing this week on the M4 between Membury Services and Woodlands St Mary. 24hour narrow lane running is in place on both the westbound and eastbound carriageways.
The B4001 Oldings Hill Bridge will be closed from Saturday 27 to Sunday 28 March to allow for installation of scaffolding and removal of damaged concrete. This scheme is scheduled to be completed by July 2010.
M4 Junction 8/9 to 10 Resurfacing
The main phase of the scheme has now commenced, and work is being undertaken on the eastbound carriageway to carry out drainage maintenance and resurfacing. The scheme is to resurface lane one and strengthen the hard shoulder of both carriageways.
There is currently contraflow traffic management and narrow lane running in place. The scheme is scheduled to be completed in April 2010.
M4 Westbrook and Wyfield Manor Farm Bridges Bridge improvement works to Westbrook Farm Bridge and Wyfield Manor Farm Bridge on the M4 between junctions 13 and 14, are now underway and are due to be completed by Easter 2010.
The scheme includes pier protection, drainage improvement works and repainting of the existing handrails. There will be 1.5 miles (2.4km) of traffic management along the M4 between junctions 13 and 14 consisting of hard shoulder and occasional off peak lane 1 closures.
M4 Junction 5 – 7
Daytime and overnight works to renew bridge parapets, safety fences, and waterproofing are now almost complete. Traffic management on the M4 at the Prince of Wales Bridge has now been removed.
There are currently overnight lane closures to allow for the bridge deck joint installation. Works are scheduled to be completed by end of March 2010.
A404(M)
Work is underway for replacing the Western Region Railway Bridge on the A404(M) near Maidenhead. Two narrow lanes will be available at peak times in each direction throughout. A 40mph speed limit will be in place for the safety of drivers and the workforce. Overnight there will be the occasional contra-flow, lane and slip road closures with signed diversions.
A31 Cadnam and Poulner Hill
Vegetation management to the central reservation and both east and west bound verges of the A31 between Cadnam and Poulner Hill continues this week. The work will be carried out between January and the end of March 2010 in order to minimise any environmental impacts and disruption to road users. .Work will be carried out under lane closures overnight between 2100hrs and 0600hrs.
A3 Guildford to Compton & Liphook to Clanfield Vegetation management to the central reservation and both north and south bound verges of the A3 between Guildford and Compton, & Liphook to Clanfield continues this week. The work will be carried out between January and the end of March 2010 in order to minimise any environmental impacts and disruption to road users. Work will be carried out under lane closures overnight between 2100hrs and 0600hrs.
A3 Guildford Drainage
Drainage work on the A3 University Interchange northbound exit slip will be carried out this week. The slip road will be closed overnight on 25 March between 22:00 and 06:00hrs and a fully signed diversion will be in place.
A303 Popham to Andover
Daytime vegetation clearance to the A303, from Popham through Andover to the A343, is currently being undertaken and is due to be completed by the end of March 2010.
This work needs to be undertaken to remove vegetation which is encroaching on the carriageway. There will be lane 1 closures, westbound and eastbound as well as restrictions to the lay-bys on the A303.
A34 Hinksey Hill Safety Improvements
Safety improvements on the A34 at Hinksey Hill, including installation of a safety fence and improved signing start this week and will continue for 3 weeks.
The work will require overnight closures of lane 1 on the A34 southbound at Hinksey Hill between 22:00hrs – 06:00hrs.
A34 Botley Interchange
Work has started to signalise the A34 Botley Interchange. Work will involve the installation of traffic signals at this junction and the creation of a signalised pedestrian crossing (Toucan crossing) on the western arm of the roundabout onto the A420.. Work will take place under off peak lane closures between 22:00hrs and 06:00 hrs.
The provision of traffic signals will regulate traffic flows in order to reduce congestion at this junction, and reduce delays to traffic using both the A34 and the local road network.
M3 Junction 4-3 Drainage Phase 2
Drainage work continues this week on M3 between J4 and J3, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2010, weather permitting.
Narrow lanes on the northbound carriageway remain in place. There will be some off-peak lane closures. A 50 mph speed limit will be enforced throughout the site, for the duration of the work.
M3 J3-2 Major Maintenance
Resurfacing work to the hard shoulder and lane 1 of the northbound carriageway continues this week on M3 between J3 and 2, and is scheduled to be completed by mid May 2010, weather permitting. There is a contra flow with 3 narrow lanes on both carriageways open at peak times. A 50mph speed limit will be enforced, for the duration of the work.
M3 J4a-5 Resurfacing
Maintenance work continues this week on the M3 between J4a and 5 and is scheduled to continue until the end of March 2010, weather permitting. Work includes resurfacing on both carriageways and the installation of a concrete barrier in the central reservation.
A three narrow lane contra flow system will be in place until late March. A 50mph speed limit will be enforced for the duration of the work.
M3 J10 Entry slip Improvements
Work to improve the existing layout of junction 10 of the M3 to reduce congestion in peak traffic between J10 and 11 on the southbound carriageway continues this week. The work is planned to be complete by the end of April 2010, weather permitting.
There will be hard shoulder and inside lane closures at times. Also at times the southbound entry slip will be closed overnight. When closed a fully signed diversion route will be in place directing road users to M3 J9 to join the main carriageway.
M27 J8-9 Bridge Maintenance
Maintenance work to replace the piers on the bridges carrying Coal Park Lane, Blundell Lane and Dodwell lane over the M27 Motorway, between Junctions 8 and 9 continues this week. The work is scheduled to be completed by early May 2010, weather permitting.
The bridges at Dodwell Lane, Blundell Lane and Coal Park Lane crossing the M27 will be closed on occasions during off-peak overnight between 2100 and 0600hrs. A fully signed diversion route will be in place when the bridges at Dodwell Lane and Blundell Lane are closed. Only authorised emergency vehicles will be able to cross when the bridge at Coal Park Lane is closed.
A3 Hindhead
Northbound traffic from Liphook has recently been directed to run on the new southbound carriageway near Spaniards Inn to travel in contraflow with traffic travelling south, rejoining the old A3 at Hazel Grove.
Major improvement work to improve the A3 and remove the current bottleneck at Hindhead traffic lights continues this week.
Traffic management for the scheme starts just before the A3 Thursley junction at the north end (nearest to Guildford) with a temporary road layout and 40mph speed limit. At the south end there is a 50mph limit starting south of the A3 Liphook junction, reducing to 40mph at Hammer Lane.
A34 Wolvercote Viaduct replacement scheme Ongoing there is a 40mph speed limit in place and two narrow lanes running both northbound and southbound on the A34 enforced by average speed cameras. The speed limit is in place for the protection of road users and road workers.
Also ongoing, the A40, which runs under the viaduct, has a 30mph speed limit and will require night time off-peak temporary traffic lights at times. Intermittent short term closures will be required of one of the cycleway/footways to continue construction activities. Localised signed diversion routes will operate, with a temporary signalised pedestrian crossing on the east side of the Wolvercote viaduct to assist cyclists and pedestrians with a safe crossing point.
A27 Hilsea to Warblington Lighting Major Maintenance Work continues this week on the second phase of works along a 2km of the A27 between Hilsea and Warblington in order to replace the existing lighting and drainage as well as carrying out safety barrier renewals.
The narrow lanes have now been removed from the carriageway and during the day time there are no planned restrictions. Work will continue under off-peak lane closures between 21:00 and 05:30hrs. There will be two slip-road closures for one night each, with a fully signed diversion in place. A cycleway diversion will be in place.
M27 J4-8 Line and Stud Replacement
Work is continuing this week to remove and replace carriageway markings and studs, on the M27 between junctions 4 and 8. This scheme will use overnight lane closures, with a restricted speed limit of 50mph through the traffic management.
Work is scheduled to take approximately 5 weeks to complete.
M4 Wood Lane Bridge Pier Protection
The preliminary phase of work for the Wood Lane Bridge Pier Protection scheme is continuing this week on the M4 between junctions 5 and 6. There will be overnight lane closures from 8 March 2010 for approximately 3 weeks.
The main phase of work to refurbish the bridge piers at Wood Lane Bridge will commence after Easter.
M4 Chieveley
Starting 29 March 2010, there will be overnight closures of the westbound exit off-slip at junction 13 of the M4. This work involves the installation and upgrade of traffic signs along the offside and nearside verges on the slip road.
The work will take place overnight using full slip-road closures between 2200hrs and 0600hrs, and is expected to be carried out over five nights, between 29 March and 10 April 2010. Whilst the westbound exit-slip is closed, a signed diversion route will be in place and will be clearly signed.
Signs upgrade
Work will be taking place to update signs at 68 locations across the Area 3 network, located on the A3, A31, A34, A303, A404 and M27.
Work should be completed within 6 weeks, and will be undertaken using overnight lane closures between 20:30hrs – 06:00hrs (Monday to Thursday) and 21:00hrs – 06:00hrs (Friday).
Signs and Safety Improvements
The scheme to upgrade directional and flag signs at various locations across the Area 3 Network started this week, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2010. The work will involve the replacement of tourist, flag and directional signs, with some signs being relocated.
Work will be undertaken at night under lane 1 closures between 2030hrs to 0600hrs (Monday to Thursday) and 2100hrs to 0600 hrs (Friday).
M271 Resurfacing
Resurfacing work will be undertaken this week, to the surface of both the northbound and southbound carriageways on the M271 between junction 1 and the Redbridge Road Roundabout.
The work commenced on Monday 22 March 2010 for approximately 8 nights, weather permitting. Work will be undertaken at night between 22:00hrs – 06:00hrs. There will be a need for full carriageway lane closures and slip road closures with when needed, signed diversions.
M4 Jct 7 Slip Road Improvement Work
Work is scheduled to commence on Monday 29 March for 3 nights, to the westbound exit off-slip on the M4 at Junction 7. These works will involve the laying of anti-skid surfacing, installation of new chevron signs and bike guard on the existing safety barrier.
Work to install the chevron signs and a bike guard will be undertaken using 24 hour slip-road hard shoulder closures. The work to apply the anti-skid surfacing will take place overnight using full slip-road closures between 2200hrs and 0600hrs, and is expected to be carried out over two nights.
Whilst the westbound off-slip is closed, a signed diversion route will be in place and will be clearly signed.
Traffic Signal Upgrade
A series of traffic signal upgrades across the region continues this month at various junctions on the Area 3 network. The work will involve replacing the current bulbs with new LED signal heads at over 40 sites over the next ten months. The new LED signal heads are brighter and lower voltage, offering safety environmental and maintenance benefits. This week work is being carried out to the signals at J13 Leigh Road. Temporary traffic signals will be in place while the signals are upgraded, and there will be some off-peak lane closures.
