LCV operators warned: Budget does not help you

LCV operators have been warned that the Chancellor’s latest Budget will not provide any help to firms struggling to deal with the recession. Steve Clarke, general manager of The Fuelcard People, said: “The Chancellor can try to spin the staging of the 3% fuel duty increase as helpful, but those of use who deal with oil prices every day have a firmer grip on reality.”

He pointed out the impact of the staged rise on the nation’s LCV users. “The arithmetic is not difficult,” he said. “Even at the lower end of consumption, anyone filling a van twice weekly will see their annual bill rise by more than £150 per van by the beginning of next year. Within less than a year, Mr. Darling will have loaded an extra £150 in costs, per van, onto LCV operators.”

“Transport and distribution is the backbone of the economy,” said Steve Clarke. “Everything around us will have travelled by road at some point, with the last leg of the journey normally being by van. This measure will increase the price of  everything we buy. These tax increases could represent the last straw for the firms with the tightest of margins. It is almost inevitable that this will drive some firms to the wall, while others will have no choice but to increase their own prices.”
