M5 Barrier works completed for Easter
Work to replace the steel central reservation barrier with a safer concrete barrier on a 8.3km stretch between M5 J15 (Almondsbury) and J17 (Cribbs Causeway) has been completed in time for the Easter holiday.
The works, which began January 14, has finished on time despite the start being delayed by 10 days because of adverse weather conditions.
Careful planning and management of site operations has also allowed a £0.5 million saving on the original construction budget of £6 million.
The new barrier is designed to improve safety by reducing the risk of cross-overs. It will also require less maintenance over the life of the barrier when compared to a steel barrier.
All traffic management has now been lifted and the temporary speed limit of 50mph has been removed.
Highways Agency Project Sponsor, Dave Stock, said, “Completion is good news for all our customers who use this section of the M5, and will greatly help those travelling during the Easter holidays.
“Our contractors have put in nearly 76,000 hours and 80 nights of work to ensure this scheme was finished on time despite the bad weather earlier in the year.
“I would like to thank all road users for their patience whilst we carried out these vital works."
