Reducing the Northwest of England’s travel carbon emissions

A new drive has been launched to help people in England’s Northwest reduce their travel costs and lower their carbon emissions from the way they travel.

Funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), the project will be led by the . Developed in the Northwest, the scheme is thought to be the first of its kind and will be rolled out nationally.

Over 100,000 homes in the Northwest who want help to take action will receive a short questionnaire (travel energy check) that assesses where costs could be saved and lead on to a lower carbon lifestyle.

Respondents to the campaign will receive a personalised and tailored report that includes local information on what’s available, offers in the local area, tips on smarter vehicle choices and driving, as well as information on other services to help them on their way.

Catherine Monaghan, Head of Energy Saving Trust North West said:

“Changing the way you travel is one of the ways in which you can make a big difference to your carbon footprint. Over the last 18 months, we have rapidly expanded our energy efficiency advice services, to include transport and travel as we found those interested in reducing their home energy bills are also keen to improve their fuel efficiency and reduce transport costs. We now provide advice on smarter driving, choosing a car and on sustainable travel, as these complement the traditional home energy advice nicely. So far, the response has been very positive, and most people are very impressed with just how much they can do, without too much effort.

“We’ve also had success at public and employee engagement events throughout the region with our ‘smarter driving simulators’, a new interactive tool that we use to demonstrate how you can save costs, simply by adapting the way in which you drive.”

Dan Griffiths, Head of Climate Change, Northwest Regional Development Agency said:

“This project is part of the Northwest’s vision to become a low carbon and well adapting region by 2020. Through the Northwest Climate Change Action Plan, the region is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting for unavoidable climate change and capitalising on opportunities for economic growth.”
