Overnight closures for A14 and A11
As part of a £70m project to install new jam-busting technology on the A14, a series of overnight closures will take place on the A14 and A11 in the Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds area.
The closures over 15 nights will allow for overhead electronic message signs to be installed.
The technology will benefit road users by reducing the number of rear-end shunts, providing drivers with strategic diversionary information as well as improving the response to incidents by the emergency services.
The work is being done in stages along the A14. This section of the scheme stretches from junction 35 of the A14 and from Six Mile Bottom on the A11 to just east of Bury St Edmunds.
The closures will take place overnight, between 9pm and 6am, when traffic flows are lower. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place during the closures.
The first overnight closure is on Monday 9 August and will affect the A14 and A11 at Six Mile Bottom on the approach to Newmarket.
The new technology is being installed along the entire length of the road from its start at the M1 Catthorpe junction through to the
Port of
Felixstowe.
Fibre optic cables are being placed along the road and in total some 72 electronic signs will be installed. This signage will provide real-time traffic information. It will monitor the road, detecting slow moving or stationary traffic and automatically set messages warning road users of delays, providing journey time information and providing advice on alternative routes.
The total scheme is due to be completed later this year.
