Inchcape conquer three peaks to raise £££’s for road safety

Inchcape Fleet Solutions, part of Inchcape plc, the leading, independent international automotive distributor and retailer has shown its commitment to road safety with a team of nine employees having completed the Three Peaks Challenge and raising £2,000 for road safety charity Brake.

Inspired by their colleagues and staff climbing three of the UK’s highest peaks in one day the directors and staff at the Portsmouth-based company decided to hold a fundraising day, boosting the final total presented to Brake to just under £4,000.

Inchcape The ‘Inchcape Fleet Solutions Climb Team’ climbed Pen y Ghent (2,273 feet), Whernside (2,415 feet) and Ingleborough,(2,372 feet), which together make up Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge – a 24-mile circular challenge walk and a climb of more than 7,000 feet starting and finishing in Horton in Ribblesdale.

The staff that completed the Challenge were led by Customer Services Director David Graham and included Business Improvement and Implementation Project Manager Tim Kett, Rental Manager Lucy Spencer, Customer Services Manager Sonya Russell, Customer Service Advisors Emma Jackson, Rachael Keywood and Alfie Ayling, Information Services Support Co-ordinator Max Ghest, and Accident Management Advisor Ricky Roost.

Mr Graham said there were two key drivers behind the decision to undertake the Three Peaks Challenge.

He said: “Brake is a very worthwhile charity and road safety is an issue that is close to the heart of our industry while a crash could affect any of us or our families at anytime in our lives.

“Secondly, the people that volunteered to complete the challenge are motivated and driven individuals that enjoy pushing themselves to professional and personal limits in an effort to achieve their goals.

“The Challenge demands high levels of commitment and discipline that is demonstrated by all the participants on a daily basis with their commitment to work. But sometime this is not enough and we all seek additional challenges and personal milestones of achievement in the betterment of ourselves. A little positive attitude is something that makes a big difference.”

During the challenge day the ‘Inchcape Fleet Solutions Climb Team’ served up a breakfast and lunchtime barbecue for their colleagues and to ensure they were not short of energy for their climbing adventure.

Inchcape Fleet Solutions’ Managing Director Terry Bartlett said: “Charitable support is close to the heart of the company and the Three Peaks Challenge and related fundraising day was an excellent way of demonstrating our commitment to road safety.

“The company has held a number of fundraising days in the past but this is the first time that we have linked one to an additional activity. The total raised was fantastic and will be donated to a very worthy cause.”

Department for Transport figures reveal that in 2008 – the most recent year for which official data is available – 2,538 people were killed on the UK’s roads and 228,367 were injured.

With Department for Transport figures revealing an estimated 200 road deaths and serious injuries occurring per week from crashes involving at-work drivers, and more employees killed and seriously injured on Britain’s roads while driving on behalf of their employer than in any other work-related activity, Brake is campaigning to cut the carnage.

Brake fundraising manager Katie Shepherd said: “Brake is very much dependent on the generosity of companies who share our determination to make the roads safer for their employees, clients and all other road users and who value our support service for road crash victims.”

Mr Bartlett added: “Inchcape Fleet Solutions urges all of its employees to become involved in charities and charity events. As well as holding a number of internal events each year we also give each employee one paid day off a year to work with a charity of their choice to make the world a better place.”
