Brighton to London Future Car Challenge launched today
The Royal Automobile Club formally launched the RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge yesterday at their Clubhouse in Pall Mall London. This new event follows in the pioneering tradition of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run – the world’s longest running motoring event.
The RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge will take place on Saturday 6 November 2010, the day before the famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and using the same 60-mile route. It will showcase low energy impact vehicles, which can have a major positive effect on climate change. Trophies will be awarded in different categories for vehicles judged to have made the least energy impact during the 60-mile run.
Introducing the RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge, George Kennedy, The Secretary of The Royal Automobile Club highlighted the historical connection with the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and the huge potential audience – particularly at the ceremonial finish in Regent Street where 250,000 spectators are expected.
"RAC is delighted to be title sponsors of the first ever Brighton to London Future Car Challenge. The car industry has embarked on one of the most radical journeys in its history – to provide the low-emitting, sustainable and affordable cars of the future. At RAC we’re very proud to represent the voice of the motorist, and when it comes to the future of cars and alternative-fuels, what they’re telling us is that they’re not sure which is the most viable option. Motorists want more information and reassurance on the alternatives. They want to be able to see and feel what the future looks like and that’s why the RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge is so important, because that’s exactly what it provides, a tangible glimpse of the future. As the driving people we’ve been there for motorists for 113 years, and we’ll continue to be there for them in the future, whatever that future may look like,” commented Chris Bates, Head of RAC Marketing.
At the launch it was confirmed that more than 30 vehicles had been entered so far with up to 50 expected by the closing date of 30 September. As well as from major car manufacturers, entries have been received from Delta Motorsport, Tesla and Gordon Murray Design. Entries are also expected for motorcycles and LGVs – both classes of vehicle being eligible and qualifying for separate awards.
