Highways Agency to resurface two bridges on the A38 near Derby

The Highways Agency will re-waterproof and resurface two bridges on the to the west of Derby to improve the quality of the surface for road users.

The work will be carried out over two separate weekends, with the first scheme being the A38 Derwent Bridge over the River Derwent. This half mile stretch of the northbound carriageway will be resurfaced on the weekend of Friday 8 October and is expected to take a full weekend and two further nights to complete.

A full closure of the northbound carriageway of the A38 between the Palmcourt interchange and Abbey Hill interchange from Friday 8 October at 20:00hrs until Monday 11 October at 06:00hrs will be required. The southbound carriageway of the A38 will not be affected. Two further overnight closures will be required to complete this work by Wednesday 13 October at 06:00hrs.

The following weekend, the Highways Agency will resurface the A38 bridge over Havenbaulk Lane. A full closure of the A38 southbound carriageway between the A516 Derby Road and the A5250 interchange will be required from Friday 15 October at 20:00hrs until Monday 18 October at 06:00hrs. The northbound carriageway will not be affected.

Clearly signposted diversion routes will be in place for both weekend and overnight closures.

Due to the nature of the work the start date is subject to weather conditions.

Highways Agency project manager, Kelly Robinson, said:

“These two weekends of work will re-waterproof and resurface the over bridges to the west of Derby as well as replacing the bridge joints, all of which will ensure the ongoing safety of road users and reduce the likelihood of emergency repair costs in the future.

“During the works, road users are advised to allow more time for their journeys to follow the diversion routes.”
