Free Rural Driving Pocket guide available free of charge
Freight Best Practice Scotland has published a new free Rural Driving Guide, which gives best practice advice on how to plan for more efficient and safer journeys within rural areas.
The Pocket Guide, which has been endorsed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA), has been specifically designed for lorry drivers and gives tips, guidance and facts to help improve safety, as well as helping save fuel and therefore money.
Driving through rural areas will often involve driving on narrow roads which can change in nature over a very short distance, often with very little notice. This may result in an HGV unexpectedly driving along inappropriate and unfamiliar routes. The Pocket Guide outlines steps to help drivers ensure their own safety and that of other road users. It offers advice to drivers on what they should look out for while planning and driving in a rural area including:
- The correct use of navigation systems;
- How to take full account of the height, weight and width of a vehicle;
- Minimising intrusion and environmental impact;
- Vulnerable road users and parking.
