A19 slip road widening works, Sunderland
Work will begin next week to construct a new lane on the northbound exit slip road at Hylton Grange Junction on the A19 in Sunderland.
The slip road will accommodate the predicted additional vehicles going to the Turbine Business Park in Sunderland turning off the A19 onto the westbound A1231. Work will begin on Monday 25 October and be completed in March 2011.
During the work it will be necessary at times to close the northbound exit slip road to the A1231 Hylton Grange Junction overnight between 8pm and 6am, during the closure there will also be one lane closed on the northbound A19 between the A183 Chester Road and A1231 Hylton Grange junctions.
When the slip road is closed drivers will be diverted north to the A1290 Downhill Lane Junction, returning south to the A1231 Hylton Grange Junction.
At times during the day there will be off peak lane closures between 9:30am and 3.30pm on the slip road and northbound A19. The layby on the A19 northbound carriageway approximately half a mile north of Chester Road will also be closed. During working hours a 50 mph speed restriction will be in place.
Highways Agency project manager Andy Crawford said: “By carrying out the slip road closures overnight we will minimise the disruption to drivers. This scheme will alleviate the effect of the extra traffic associated with the development without increasing traffic delays on the A19.”
