Transport Secretary pays visit to RHA office
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) had a special visitor to their Weybridge offices last week, when the local MP popped in for an interview. The Member of Parliament for Runnymede and Weybridge also happens to be the current Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond.
Mr Hammond managed to find time in his a busy schedule for an interview with Roadway editor, Caroline Bullock and although time was short, Caroline managed to question Mr Hammond on a number of industry issues, including that of the constant battle to attract more young people into the industry.
Mr Hammond seemed genuinely surprised to hear that young people were not tempted to take up a career in the road freight industry”, said Caroline. “He seemed even further surprised to hear that the sector is not as well paid as he had previously thought”.
“The post of Secretary of State for Transport has never been what could be regarded as a ‘permanent’ position”, said RHA Head of Communications, Kate Gibbs. “Since Alistair Darling left to become Chancellor in 2007, we have seen a succession of incumbents. Let us hope that having the Secretary of State, quite literally, on our doorstep, will make a difference.”
