Nearly 60% of RHA members have begun CPC training
During the month of September, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) carried out a comprehensive survey of its membership. The aim was to gain a deeper insight into members’ areas of operation, concerns and, of course, predictions for the future.
The survey was split into 6 groups; the four RHA regions, members operating 30 and 99 vehicles and those with fleets in excess of 99 vehicles.
RHA Training Services have trained well over 600 instructors as part of their ‘Train the Trainer’ scheme through courses which have been tailored to be ‘company specific’; thereby allowing the company to be in far greater control of its own training needs.
“The implementation deadline for the Drivers’ CPC is September 2014”, said RHA Chief Executive Geoff Dunning. “It is a concern that although we are providing specific training for company instructors, some of them, due in no small part to budgetary constraints, have still to implement their new skills upon their workforce.
“We encouraged that despite the fact that this new legislation is sometimes seen as an added industry burden; nearly 60 of RHA members surveyed are well under way to completing their 35 hours of mandatory training.
“RHA Training is fast becoming recognised as a key player in providing training to cover every industry requirement”, continued Geoff Dunning. “When the deadline for this particular piece of legislation is reached, it will be an industry whose drivers are among the safest and most compliant of ALL road users.
“Our survey proves that in recent years, the road industry in general and the RHA membership in particular has diversified to a massive degree. This has been brought about, in the main, by necessity as opposed to choice.
“It proves that ours is an industry prepared to change”, Geoff Dunning continued. “Perhaps the most encouraging response was that to the final question of the survey, ‘Do you think you will still be in road haulage in five years from now?’. A massive 90% responded with an extremely positive ‘Yes’”.
