Safety improvements for A11 junction at Ketteringham

A scheme to improve safety at the junction of the and Station Lane near Ketteringham, south of Norwich begins on Monday 22 November.

The work will involve closing the central reservation gaps, widening the southbound carriageway of the A11 to provide an improved left turn exit slip and junction at Station Lane South.

As part of this important safety work there will be improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists at this junction. In addition, changes will be made to the carriageway drainage system at this point.

Jacques Azulay, project manager for the Highways Agency, said: “The closure of these two central reservation gaps will considerably add to the safety of vehicles seeking to cross the A11. Crossing two lanes of frequently fast moving traffic can be hazardous and though our planned work will result in a slightly longer journey for those seeking to cross the A11 at this point it will make the crossing much safer.”

Work for these improvements will be carried out between 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday with occasional overnight work between 8pm and 6am. Lane closures will be in place during these times. Occasional closures of the A11 will be necessary; these closures will be fully signed and a brief diversion via the B1172 via Hethersett will be in place. The work is expected to be completed by mid February 2011.

You forget to mention that longer vehicles and vehiles with trailers pose an even bigger threat to oncoming traffic.

Very often people will think their exit is clear and attempt to cross through the gap only to be halted by fast moving, oncoming traffic on the other side, leaving an obstruction and danger to the traffic.

These are the worst kind of junctions for so many reasons.
