Transport Secretary welcomes A19 Silverlink roundabout improvement to cut congestion in North Tyneside

Road users in North Tyneside are to benefit from a £2.8 million roundabout improvement scheme which will cut congestion on the .

An extra 1,200 vehicles per hour will be able to use the A19/A1058 Silverlink Roundabout when the work is finished next summer.

The Highways Agency has awarded the contract for improvements at the roundabout, and work is due to start in January.

Visiting North Tyneside today, Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said:

“The A19 is a vital route supporting the economy of Tyneside and the North East, so I am delighted that work will start soon to reduce congestion around this important junction. The work is due to finish in summer 2011, ready for traffic using the new Tyne Crossing when both tunnels are opened in December 2011. The scheme will aid smoother journeys for road users ahead of the major improvements planned for the A19 after 2015.”

The main work on the improvement will begin in January. The A19 northbound and southbound approaches to the roundabout will be widened from two to four lanes, the A1058 eastbound exit-slip road will be widened from two to three lanes, the roundabout carriageway itself will also be widened, the existing traffic signals will be extended, and pedestrian crossings will be improved.

To keep disruption to road users to a minimum, work on the roundabout island and verges will take place outside peak traffic times. There will be some off-peak lane closures on the roundabout, its approaches and exits, and a 50mph speed limit will be in place throughout the works, for the safety of road users and workers.
