There will be a further overnight closure on Wednesday 5 January. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the B1172. A temporary 50 mph speed restriction is in place 24 hours and will remain in place over Christmas and New Year. The scheme to improve safety at the junction of the A11 and Station Lane near Ketteringham, south of Norwich, started on Monday 22 November. The work will involve closing the central reserve gaps, widening the southbound carriageway of the A11 and amending the Station Lane east junction. There will also be improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists at the junction. The work will be carried out between the hours of 7am and 7pm Mondays to Saturdays, with no traffic management in place on the northbound carriageway between 7am and 9am on weekday mornings. ONGOING WORK M1 J10 TO J13 BEDFORDSHIRE – HARD SHOULDER RUNNING SCHEME Both the northbound and southbound entry sliproads at junction 12 will be closed overnight on Tuesday 21 December. A contraflow is in operation on the M1 between Junctions 12 and 13. During peak hours three lanes will remain open in both directions. A contraflow remains in operation from north of Junction 11 to Junction 10, diverting a lane of southbound traffic onto the northbound carriageway. Traffic on the northbound carriageway is using the hard shoulder as an additional lane. This allows for three lanes of traffic in each direction during the day whilst work takes place. This will continue until July 2011. There are currently hard shoulder closures between Junctions 11 and 12, with a speed restriction of 50 mph. This 50mph speed restriction is now in place 24 hours a day between Junctions 10 and 13. The enforced 50mph speed limit is there for the safety of the travelling public and the workforce on site. This traffic management is in place for the work on the Hard Shoulder Running scheme to reduce congestion and improve safety on the 15 mile stretch of the M1 in Bedfordshire. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys whilst the road works are taking place. As part of the scheme, the Highways Agency will also upgrade junctions 11 (Dunstable) and 12 (Toddington). A1(M) HERTFORDSHIRE BRIDGE REPAIRS Repairs to bridges on the A1(M) between Junction 6 (Welwyn) and Junction 7 (Knebworth) began on Monday 4 October. The repair work will be carried out in two shifts every day between 7.30am and 5.30pm and between 9pm and 7am with completion expected in mid December. It will involve repairs to the beams, parapet and bearing replacement, and concrete repairs on four bridges between Welwyn and Knebworth both over and under the dual carriageway. While the work is taking place there will be overnight lane closures, hard shoulder closures and a 50 mph speed restriction in place. Two lanes will remain open throughout the peak traffic period but there will a restriction in lane width and drivers are asked to take care. In addition a rolling block and a closure of Junction 7 will be required throughout one night (date to be confirmed) at North Lodge while the bridge is being jacked. Some work will be carried out overnight, weather permitting, between 10pm and 6am, with lane closures controlled by temporary traffic lights and a speed limit of 10mph in place through the works area. A ‘puffin’ crossing uses sensors to detect people on the crossing which then adjust the red traffic signal accordingly. A14 CAMBRIDGESHIRE SURVEY WORK Work to survey the drainage system along the whole length of the A14 started on Monday 1 November. The first two stages of the survey work are currently taking place between Catworth (junction 16) and Brampton Hut (junction 21), and between Alconbury Spur to Spittals Interchange, weather permitting. A14 ORWELL BRIDGE BEARINGS REPLACEMENT WORK Work is being carried out in preparation for bearings replacement work in mid January at Pier 5 on the Wherstead side of the Orwell Bridge, which carries the A14 over the River Orwell near Ipswich, Suffolk. There are currently Lane 2 closures on the east and westbound carriageways overnight and a temporary 50mph speed limit as required for safety reasons over the bridge in both directions, with average speed cameras in place. Two lanes will be open in both directions during daytime hours and the temporary 50mph speed limit will remain in place. The scheme is due for completion by end of January 2011. A14 SUFFOLK SAFETY BARRIER RENEWAL WORK NEAR STOWMARKET Work began on Wednesday 3 November to renew the safety barriers on Cedars Interchange (junction 50), near Stowmarket.
