M62 closures for bridge replacement works in West Yorkshire 07/01/2011
The Highways Agency is advising drivers of forthcoming overnight closures of the M62 motorway in West Yorkshire, for the replacement of Whitechapel Bridge.
Whitechapel Bridge spans the M62 between Junction 25 and 26 and carries the B6120 Whitechapel Road between Scholes and Cleckheaton. The bridge was closed in August for 42 weeks to allow major bridge replacement works to take place.
Following the demolition of the bridge in September, work is now taking place to replace the bridge. This will require weekend overnight closures of the M62 between Junctions 25 and 26 commencing on Friday 7 January. During the closures the main bridge steelwork and beams will be lifted into place. These closures were planned for December but were postponed due to heavy snow. Closures will take place on:
* Friday 7 January, between 10pm and 8am, the east and westbound carriageways will be closed
* Saturday 8 January, between 9pm and 8am, the east and westbound carriageways will be closed
* Sunday 9 January, between 9pm and 6am – the east and westbound carriageways may be closed, possibly lane closures only depending on progress of works
* From Monday 10 January – one week of night time lane closures east and westbound
The dates for the closures are weather dependent and drivers are advised to check the motorway signs or the Traffic England website http://www.trafficengland.com/index.aspx?ct=true for the most up to date information.
During the closures drivers are advised to plan their journey and allow extra time when travelling on the diversion routes. When the westbound carriageway is closed, traffic will be diverted through Brighouse, the eastbound diversion will be through Cleckheaton and Liversedge. The routes will be clearly signed and details can be found on the Highways Agency website www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/27497.aspx
Highways Agency project manager Tim Calvert said: “The scheme has been progressing well, replacing a bridge across a motorway is a very difficult and complex task and inevitably will cause some inconvenience to the public. Every effort has been made to minimise the disruption, to road users and residents. The M62 closures take place overnight and at weekends when traffic flows are lower.
