Scheme starts to cut congestion at A19 Silverlink roundabout
Work will start on a £2.8 million roundabout improvement scheme in North Tyneside on 10 January. The scheme is designed to increase capacity of the A19 / A1058 Silverlink Roundabout by an additional 1200 vehicles per hour.
The work involves widening parts of the circulatory carriageway from three to four lanes and installing new traffic signal controls. The A19 approaches will be widened from two lanes to four lanes and the A1058 Coast Road eastbound exit slip road will be widened from two lanes to three lanes. Pedestrian routes through the junction will be improved. There will also be drainage improvements, earthworks and utility diversions.
The works will mainly take place overnight and during off peak hours to reduce the impact on road users. There will be overnight lane closures on the A19 and Silverlink Roundabout between 8pm and 6am. During critical operations carriageway closures may be required. Lane closures may also be required during the daytime on the slip roads and The Silverlink access. For safety reasons a 50mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works.
Highways Agency project manager, Shaun Cullumbine, said: “This work will reduce congestion and improve safety at this important junction. The work is due to finish in summer 2011, ready for traffic using the new Tyne Crossing when both tunnels are opened in December 2011.”
