Highways Agency to install new safety barrier on A38 near Burton on Trent
The Highways Agency will begin work to install a 220 yard safety barrier on the A38 southbound near Burton on Trent, to improve safety for road users and local allotment users.
The new barrier will be erected on the southbound carriageway between the Branston island and A5121 Clay Mills junction. Work will start on 17 January 2011 and is expected to take two weeks to complete.
A safety evaluation was carried out at the site following a number of incidents on that stretch of the A38, including a vehicle leaving the carriageway and landing in the nearby allotment. This led to the Highways Agency’s decision to install a new safety barrier to reduce the likelihood of similar occurrences.
Liz Davis, route sponsor for the Highway Agency said:
“We take safety very seriously, and following any incident we look for ways to prevent a future occurrence. Installation of this barrier will reduce the likelihood of vehicles leaving the carriageway and ensure the safety of people working on the allotments adjacent to the A38.
“To reduce the impact on road users, the work will be carried out overnight and the A38 will remain open at all times.”
To carry out the work, lane 1 of the A38 southbound will be closed between 20:00 and 06:00 when traffic is at its quietest to reduce the impact on road users. The northbound carriageway will be un-affected by the works.
