Whitechapel Bridge beams successfully lifted into place

A major milestone was reached this weekend when work to install the steel beams for the new Whitechapel Road bridge which spans the M62 between Junction 25 and 26 in West Yorkshire were successfully installed.

carries the B6120 Whitechapel Road between Scholes and Cleckheaton. The bridge was closed in August for 42 weeks to allow major bridge replacement works to take place. Following the demolition of the bridge in September, work took place last weekend to lift the main bridge steelworks and beams into place. The work was carried out overnight in order to minimise any disruption to drivers.

Work is continuing on site and there are currently two weeks of overnight lane closures in place between 8pm and 6am. During these lane closures work will take place on the new bridge deck, concrete planks will be installed between steel beams and ducting will be installed for utilities.

Highways Agency project manager Tim Calvert said: “The scheme has been progressing well and we are pleased that this major milestone has been reached. The works are approximately two weeks behind schedule due to the bad weather experienced before Christmas. This meant we had to cancel our initial dates for lifting the beams into place. We will be doing everything we can to make up the lost time over the coming months. Every effort is being made to minimise the disruption, to road users and residents.”
