CFC: SME’s choosing to ignore licence checking
Whilst the majority of large fleet operators have adopted risk management and licence checking as part of their procedures, in recognition of the safety and ultimate cost savings it brings, CFC Solutions say that there are still small and medium enterprises that choose to ignore their legal or ethical obligations to their fleets as they feel a change to a companywide fleet risk management policy and would prove too costly or be an administrative burden.
Neville Briggs, managing director at CFC Solutions, said: “Managers in these small and medium sized companies know that they are taking a legal risk and could face severe penalties in the event of a serious accident in which they are found to be at fault – but are simply willing to run that risk.
“Part of this appears to be a recessionary mindset – that they don’t have time to focus on anything other than their core activity – but part is also down to what you might describe as denial. They don’t think that it will happen to them.”
Free to adopt, Licence Link is designed to help employers simplify the routine task of regularly checking car and van driver licence information through a web based system – made essential by the introduction of risk management legislation. Licence Link also allows the user to store document scans against each driver record and holds these files online in encrypted form for security purposes. Access to Licence Link is via a credit payment scheme and companies buy credits in advance and as each licence check is required.
Briggs added that the fleet industry could only tackle this situation by explaining the cost effectiveness of properly structured risk management “In most cases we see, the promotion of a safety mindset has its own financial benefits through everything from lower insurance costs to reduced vehicle wear and tear. By emphasising this argument, we may win over the unconvinced.”
