Highways Agency to review plans for Norcross Junction improvements

The is to urgently review plans for a £1.9m scheme to improve one of the busiest junctions along the A585 in Lancashire following concerns raised by residents, local authorities and elected representatives.

The five month scheme, originally planned to start at the end of this month, involved replacing the Norcross Junction roundabout near Thornton-Cleveleys with traffic lights.

Around 25,000 vehicles use this part of the A585 every day and the Agency’s proposal to replace the five arm roundabout with traffic lights was designed to reduce queuing during peak traffic periods on all approaches to the junction, giving safer and more reliable journeys for local road users, commuters and people using the road to travel between the M55 and Fleetwood docks.

Pedestrians and cyclists would also benefit from the planned improvements, with a new traffic lights system introducing dedicated crossing points for the first time. The new arrangements also aimed to cut air pollution by reducing the volume of standing traffic.

Matt Sweeting, the Highways Agency’s North West Regional Performance Manager, said,

“Our contractors informed interested parties, including local authorities and MPs, last Autumn about our proposed works at Norcross Junction.

We want to reduce queues onto the roundabout at peak times, and provide safer crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. However, we recognise the local concerns that have been raised and will now look again at the proposals for this junction.”
