Work starts on A12 Bascule Bridge

Essential maintenance work will start next month on the Bascule Bridge over Lake Lothing in Lowestoft.

The bridge, which is an important link for people living and working in the town, will be closed overnight for five nights during the work while a fault on one of its hydraulic units is investigated and repaired. The hydraulic units are part of the system which lifts the bridge to allow harbour traffic to pass underneath.

Work will start on Sunday 13 March, and is expected to be complete by Sunday 27 March.

Highways Agency project manager Tim Hughes said:

“We know how much people in Lowestoft depend on the Bascule Bridge every day – by both road and water – and are committed to keeping delays to an absolute minimum throughout this work. By carrying out the work overnight, and by avoiding the busy Friday and Saturday night periods, we hope to achieve this. We are also taking the opportunity to carry out some resurfacing work at nearby Station Square while the bridge is closed.”

The bridge will be closed overnight on Sunday 13 March from 6pm to 6am, and then for around five weekday nights between 8pm and 6am up to 27 March.

A free bus service round the diversion route will be provided for pedestrians wishing to cross the bridge during the closures.

Advanced signing and a signed diversion route will be in place during the works. All restrictions will be removed outside working times.
