M4 Junction 4a to Junction 4 near Heathrow Airport: improvement work starts

A package of improvements is to be carried out to make journeys safer and more reliable on the Heathrow spur road.

The work on the M4 northbound between junctions 4a and 4 will include extending anti-skid surfacing and installing new signs. There will also be landscaping improvements north and southbound.

The five week scheme is due to begin on 28 February 2011.

Peter Rix, Highways Agency area performance manager for the M25, said:

“This work is part of our commitment to safe and reliable journeys. The new signs will give drivers more warning about traffic signals ahead. The work will also include extending the anti-skid surfacing, and the landscaping improvements will enhance the environment.

“The work has been carefully planned to minimise disruption and will be carried out mostly overnight, when traffic flows are lowest.”

Besides the signs and anti-skid surfacing work, existing scrub and vegetation on the verges and within the central area of the junction 4 roundabout will be removed, and new trees and shrubs will be planted. These will include holly, common privet, wild cherry, English oak, and dogwood.

The signage and surfacing work will be carried out overnight, seven days a week. The work will be undertaken between 10pm and 5am; on Fridays work will start at 11pm, and Sundays 10.30pm and is expected to take around three weeks.

During these hours there will be northbound lane closures and on occasions, when work is carried out in the central reservation, the hard shoulder will be used as a running lane. On these occasions the southbound lane 3 bus lane will be closed.

The landscaping will take place between 28 February and 02 April. It will be undertaken 24 hours a day and will involve closures of the hard shoulder, except when work is taking place in the central reservation.

On the northern roundabout lane 2 will be closed overnight for landscaping of the roundabout to take place.
