Brake conference celebrates road safety triumphs
An annual conference held by road safety charity Brake showcased the achievements of UK companies in championing work-related road safety yesterday.
The 8th annual ‘Best of the Best’ conference gave fleet managers the opportunity to hear detailed case studies from award-winning fleet safety managers and suppliers.
The event, sponsored by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, included speakers such as Simon Monk of Vauxhall Motors and Andy Price of Zurich Risk Engineering, who delivered a joint session demonstrating how a partnership approach to improving fleet safety not only reduced company insurance premiums, but informed driver risk reduction policies and aided the development of a company-wide road safety culture.
Lynne Beale, group risk manager at Arriva, shared invaluable advice on successfully implementing an eco-driving policy through winning the hearts and minds of drivers.
She commented: “Speaking at Best of the Best was a great opportunity to share what Arriva are doing and have discussions with other fleet professionals about best practice in our field.”
Martin Clark from Balfour Beatty Plant & Fleet Services also gave a presentation on their approaches to reducing road risk through targeted driver training and interventions to reduce driver distractions.
Speakers also urged other fleet professionals to put themselves forward for June’s Fleet Safety Awards.
Paul Wreaves, Operations Director at ETS Distribution, who spoke at the conference said: “We’ve received positive media coverage following the awards and had opportunities to share our expertise with other companies through events like the conference.
“Gaining this recognition of our work was a great honour, and has helped to raise our profile in the sector.”
The deadline for entries into the awards is 1 April with the winners being named at Alton Towers, Staffordshire, on 9 June. Click here to download your entry form.
Caroline Perry, Events Manager at Brake, says: “More and more fleets are acting positively to manage road risk and improve safety.
“The awards present a fantastic opportunity to receive national recognition for your commitment to fleet safety and we urge all types of organisation involved in this field to get involved by entering and participating in a great night’s entertainment and networking.”
