Survey outlines the pros and cons of motoring in the 90s

Cheaper fuel and fewer cars on the roads have topped a list of things drivers miss about motoring from 20 years ago.

In a of 2,000 adults, conducted by , motorists bemoaned the arrival of congestion charging, more expensive parking and more widespread speed bumps.

Motorists also fondly recalled a time with fewer chicanes and roundabouts.

Despite much uproar at the time of their introduction, a return to speed camera-free roads came in sixth place, gaining only a third of motorists’ support.

When asked what they like most about modern motoring, today’s safer and more reliable vehicles were highly lauded as was their better comfort, fuel efficiency and rust protection.

Ian Fraser, chief executive of Kwik Fit said: “Motorists clearly have mixed feelings about conditions now compared to twenty years ago. On the one hand, cars have pretty much improved in every department with even basic models offering air conditioning, electric windows and even satnav.

“But with rising fuel prices and congestion it’s understandable that motorists are particularly sentimental about a time when petrol was much cheaper and the roads weren’t as crowded as they are now.

“Cars and motoring conditions have changed tremendously over the past twenty years so has Kwik-Fit, which celebrates its 40th birthday this year.”

1.8 million of drivers (4%) confessed that they don’t like a single thing about modern motoring and prefer how all things were in the past.
