Brake encourage Police to start planning now for Road Safety Week 2011

Road safety charity are calling on all Police forces to get involved in the planning for the ‘Too Young To Die’ themed Road Safety Week 2011, 21-27 November, in order to ensure maximum publicity for the even can be achieved. , organises the Week annually with the support of agencies including the Police Federation and the Association of Chief Police Officers.

The theme for this year’s event links directly to the 2Young2Die campaign, specifically aimed at teenagers and young drivers, organised by Brake who run workshops and competitions to raise awareness.

Forces can get involved by running education or enforcement campaigns for example around the 2011 theme, and police officers are encouraged to attend Brake’s 2young2die one day training course on delivering workshops in schools and colleges.

More ideas are available at www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk by clicking on the ‘road safety professionals’ button. For more details on Brake’s 2Young2Die campaign go to www.brake.org.uk/2young2die.

The 9th Road Safety Forum International Congress in June, also run by Brake, will look at the topic of youth, gender and road risk.  For more details go to www.roadsafetyforum.org/events.

Brake campaigns director Julie Townsend says: “Police forces deal with the daily carnage of road crashes, so are ideally placed to get involved in Road Safety Week and help get the Week’s message across in their communities. Forces carry out valuable road safety campaigns year round, and there is particular value in carrying out initiatives in Road Safety Week, when media interest is heightened.”

Neil Fillingham, force traffic management coordinator at Humberside Police and a supporter of the Week says: “Road Safety Week offers a fantastic opportunity for us to work with the public and remind them of key road safety issues through a variety of activities and events. I would encourage all police forces and partners to get involved in 2011, and to work together with Brake to reduce the devastation of death and injury on our roads.”
