IAM tells drivers: ‘Gears to go, brake to slow’
Road safety charity the IAM is offering weekly motoring tips, with Britain’s top advanced driver and chief IAM examiner, Peter Rodger recommending: “block changing”. Use the brakes to slow down, then, when the speed is right, choose the gear that is best for that speed. For example, drivers may move from fourth straight into second, after they have finished braking. Brake pads are cheaper to replace than clutches. You can also block change to move up, skipping intermediate gears.
Rodger said: “Block changing is choosing the optimum gear for your speed rather than working your way up or down through the gears. Missing unnecessary gears means fewer revs so it saves on fuel and wear and tear. Use your gears to go and your brakes to slow.
