There have been a number of signs that the powers that be are ready to scrap the proposed rise in .

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, Chancellor George Osbourne revealed he was “looking very carefully” at freezing fuel duty in this Wednesday’s Budget.

The millionaire also used the TV appearance to hit back at Ed Balls’ comments earlier in the week that he did not comprehend the pressure motorists were under from record-high petrol prices.

Meanwhile, another positive indicator came as David Cameron openly acknowledged the ‘pain’ motorists were enduring at the pumps last week.

He told the House of Commons: “I know the pain that families and small businesses are feeling from the huge numbers of fuel duty increases that were put through by the last government.

“In their last Budget, [Labour] put through seven fuel increases – one for before the election and six afterwards. What a surprise they didn’t even have the brass neck to raise that.”
