Overnight work on A14 Orwell Bridge
Drivers around Ipswich are being advised by the Highways Agency to plan their journeys this week as overnight work to carry out essential maintenance and inspection work on the A14 Orwell Bridge starts on Tuesday.
The work includes repairs to the drainage system on the eastbound carriageway, carriageway resurfacing, gully cleaning and ongoing inspection work.
The work is being carried out over the course of six weekday nights from 8pm to 6am, starting Tuesday 22 March until Wednesday 30 March.
The first two nights of work require a full closure of the eastbound carriageway. The A14 eastbound will be closed between Junction 56 (Wherstead Interchange) and Junction 57 (Nacton Interchange) with traffic diverted off the A14 at Junction 55 (Copdock Interchange) round the north of Ipswich via the A1214, A1189 and A1156 to rejoin at Junction 58 (Seven Hills Interchange). No daytime restrictions will apply. The diversion route will be clearly signed.
Tim Hughes, Highways Agency project manager, said:
“To minimise disruption to drivers we are carrying out the work over week nights, when traffic flows are lowest. While the carriageway is closed for the drainage repairs we are taking the opportunity to do the resurfacing, gully cleaning and other inspection work.
“We do urge drivers to check the latest conditions before they set out – for example by listening to local radio, or checking the Highways Agency’s website.”
On all other nights of work there will be single lane closures eastbound and/or westbound over the Orwell Bridge as necessary and 50mph temporary speed limit if required.
