1p is ‘not enough’ – 62% of drivers slam fuel duty cut
Two thirds of drivers reckon that the 1p cut in fuel duty, announced in Chancellor George Osborne’s Budget last week, does not go far enough.
Over 1,700 drivers gave their reaction in a poll, conducted by discount website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, with 62% of them saying the 1p decrease ‘isn’t enough’.
Respondents were also asked what they would consider a reasonable price for a litre of fuel. ‘£1 per litre’ was the reply in most cases. 28% said they hadn’t seen much of a difference from the fuel duty cuts.
One in ten said they were forced to use their car less due to fuel prices, while 14% have increased their use of public transport this year than they did previously, in order to spend less money.
Insight
Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “We thought it would be good to get a bit of an insight into how the Budget announcements had affected consumers and what they thought about the Chancellor’s decisions.
“It’s interesting that even though we were half expecting a rise in fuel duty but instead received a cut, people still think it’s not enough; and quite rightfully so, in my opinion.”
He continued: “Driving is expensive enough when you take into account things like MOTs, tax discs, servicing and general maintenance, so it would be good to see more of a drop in fuel.”
