1 in 5 drivers stumped by basic road signs
As the Highway Code passes its 80th birthday [full story], a survey has revealed that one in five motorists don’t understand the most basic road signs.
Only 21% of the 1,200 drivers surveyed by Swinton Insurance could correctly identify the sign for two way traffic crosses one-way road.
In the study which focussed on road signs and simple Highway Code knowledge, just 23% knew the road sign for level crossing without a barrier while only 17% recognised the sign for T-junction with priority over vehicles from the right.
A further 27% of motorists were unsure of what separates a centre line and a hazard warning line.
Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton, says the Highway Code should be relevant to more than just the learner driver.
"It seems that most motorists look at the Highway Code in order to pass their driving test and don’t pick it back up again,” he comments.
“However, it is vital that motorists are able to identify all road signs and know basic rules of the road to avoid accidents and any resultant motor insurance claims."
