Fleet drivers over-rely on sat navs
Fleet drivers concentrate on the road just a third of the time according to claims from the Fuelcard Company.
Sat-navs have been blamed for distracting drivers who prefer to rely on their GPS devices to guide the way and neglect vital road signs.
Although the automated navigation systems have revolutionised the way we drive, the road ahead should still be the main focus says Jakes de Kock, Sales and Marketing Director at The Fuelcard Company, who has urged fleet companies to tackle the problem head-on.
“We are developing a worrying over-reliance on this technology which is all too often overriding common sense and undermining road safety,” he said.
“Drivers should never follow their sat-nav blindly and always pay attention to road signs which deliver important safety warnings, such as road or lane closures, which can not be picked up by satellite navigation systems.”
The Fuelcard Company decided to look into the issue itself after the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) published evidence that fleet drivers give the road their full attention just 66% of the time.
All drivers at Zenith Coach Travel were banned from using sat-nav devices after a coachload of schoolchildren destined for Hampton Court Palace in Surrey ended up at a road called Hampton Court in North London.
